1967 442 - New Project
#7
Don't really plan to start any work until the weather breaks. It will be a long term project. It was sitting outside in the grass so first up I need to assess the frame condition. Got it home today just before the snow started.

Interior needs complete restoration
Boxed control arms and sway bar
Cant find the rear end code - not sure this is original
Preliminary frame inspection not promising - luckily I have a spare
Full engine bay
Let me know what other pics folks want to see.

Quite the project I see, Its a great challenge which I also enjoy as long as you have the time and funds to make good again. I will be watching for a build thread, love it. Do you know rear gear ratio? Is it a limited slip?

this sports coupe looks like its worth the finance and if you're doing most of the sweat equity you just may break even -
only because of this rare model and being a more desirable 4 speed i would go for it.
Cutlass Supreme Sports Coupe 4,751 total and how many 4 speeds---not many i.m sure.
Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe 16,998

I have no delusions about this project. I realize it will cost more than its worth and that it will never be worth the time and money I have invested to anyone but me. I know it will take me 5-7 years to complete. But a restoration like this is on my bucket list. My kids are grown and I am bored out my mind and need a project. Frankly, I am more interested in the project than the finished product. My son (Mitchy) and I have disassembled and replaced almost everything on his 70 Cutlass. We learned a lot and acquired a ton of tools. He is headed off to Penn Tech to learn Welding and Metal Fabrication (big plus) and he is excited to take on this project with me. Worst case scenario, I have to liquidate everything at firesale prices and lose all the time and money spent and I am prepared for that.

Open rear - IS on axle
Any idea the origin of this rear end?
Pics of the rear end. The rust appears so uniform that it doesn't look like it is a swap but an open rear on a 442 with boxed control arms and sway bar makes no sense.

that appears to be "TS" ?? (or probably "T8")
the only reference I found for TS = 2.41 w/anti-spin & power disc brakes (but that reference also states it's a OLDS axle) the casting number 9783393 shows that is a PONTIAC housing
but shouldn't that be a Turnpike Cruiser ONLY axle??
lots happens to cars in 50+ years

the post-coupes were the less-expensive choice for a 442
it appears to have only a few options:
442 * 4-speed * deluxe seat belts (confirmed on body tag)
& possibly - power disc brakes * radio *
the boxed control arms & rear sway bar are STANDARD 442 equipment
3.90:1 rear also ratio was STANDARD with the close ratio 4-speed (without the anti-spin) code "T8" with power disc brakes

Looks like TS to me and for sure a 8.2 P type axle
The TC had the 256 gear
Yes this car went thru the gas crunch in '74 people were swapping engines, rears, carbs trying to get better gas mileage.

If I'm not mistaken the date code on the axle housing is A037 as shown in one of the photos . That would translate to January 03,1967. A=month, 03=day, 7=year. Car was built 4th week of February 1967. That would make sense being original to the car.

It probably is in the 1966 CSM, 67 was a weird year for Olds and rear ends. Both 10 bolt cover P type rears and the Olds O with the 12 bolt cover were used and it seems without rhyme or reason. The W 30 in 67 all used the P type rear.... I parted 2 67 4dr Cutlasses one with a 12 bolt rear and one with the 10 bolt. Both were non posi with highway gears. It seems literature and data for 67 all pointed to the new O type rear.

I agree any true 442 is worth trying to save but when a true 442 that is in very nice condition, no rust anywhere, can be bought for under $20K you have to ask yourself, "Is It Worth It". I have a friend here with a true 67, 442 very nice, that has one that has virtually no lookers for $18K I wonder what is going on?

No it is Saffron with black interior and automatic, but it is still a real 442 and no rust to repair. A person could spend over $10K on this car on rust repair alone then there is paint, interior, wiring, exhaust, etc...

So I already have a 67 Cutlass Supreme Convertible that I have been working on since 2000. There is not much else I want to do to it. I bought this car because I want a project. I can easily afford to buy one that is done, but where is the fun in that? The fact that it is a 442 with a 4 speed is the icing on the cake.
