Carter Thermoquad on 66 442 - original?

My 66 442 has a Carter Thermoquad on the original 400 engine. I've always thought that it was probably a replacement for the original Rochester Quadrajet sometime in the late 60's to early 70's. Is it possible that the Carter could be original? I've heard stories that because of the high demand for the quadrajets at the time that some Carter thermoquads were used. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks -

I would say your car came for sure with a quadrajet and I am not sure when the plastic bodied thermoquad was invented but I would say for sure it was owner replaced.

You sure it's not a Carter QuadraJet? Carter did supply them to GM, but most I've seen were on Pontiacs.

It would not be unusual to see a 1966 QJet replaced with something else. That first-year design had some teething problems. They had a strange diaphram needle and seat and were quite prone to well plug leakage.

The afb is not a spreadbore like the thermoquad. Before 66 olds used the Rochester 4 Jet with the Quadrajet being introduced for the 66 Model year. The intakes would be different as well.

My apologies to all, it is a quadrajet by Carter licensed by GM. I must have had a senior moment. So my question should have been, Could they have used the quadrajet by Carter on my 442 in 66'. In reading rocketraiders response, I guess it could have been possible.

Check the number on the carb to see if it's correct for a 1966. And although we've cleared up the confusion, note that the Carter Thermoquad didn't even exist in 1966.
