Need a little help with my water pump. I have a 425 D block and need to replace the water pump. Can I use a 455 pump as long as the lengh of the shaft is the same? Are they interchangable?

Yes they are.

All 1964-1990 Olds V8 motors (except the 1964 394) use the same front cover and thus can interchange water pumps. As you note, length must match. Also, there are some with only one fitting on top for the t-stat housing bypass hose and others with two (one for the heater hose also). The 1964 pumps are one-year-only and have the inlet on the driver's side. And the V-6 diesels used a reverse-rotation pump for a true serpentine drive.

Length is determined by the car not engine; there are 5.12, 5.59" and 5.95" heights.

Yes, though actually the car AND the application (A/C or HD cooling vs. non-A/C).

Thanks for the help,. I will match the pump before buying a new one. I do have HD cooling and AC.
