How to tell if the right intake manifold

I know intake manifolds are swappable between 400/425/455's. I have a 66 425 2bbl and want to swap to a 4bbl. There is a non-EGR 455 4bbl manifold locally on Craigslist and I just want to make sure I am buying the right thing as I am not an expert like some of you out there. What do I look for to ensure this is indeed a 455 Olds manifold?

Thanks,

Rick

re: above...

...and what size carb should I be looking for? Mabe around 600 cfm??? I don't plan on cracking open the engine anytime soon as it runs pretty well. Just adding duals with Cherry Bombs I got off CL.

Thanks again,

Rick

You should get a Quadrajet to put on it. That will be more than big enough for your engine and it will give you good driveability and power.

How to tell?...Easy, First make sure its a BB manifold....measure how wide your 2bbl is and compare it to the 4bbl. The 4bbl manifold will look the same as your 2bbl except for the 4bbl configuration. There are different choke options with the BB manifolds...one is for and air tube to carb choke and one has an area for a divorced choke.

Here's the ad:

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/pts/831349382.html

The choke is part of the manifold. Do I need to stay away from this or would this be on OK way to go? How much (if at all) would it limit my carb search? Or do I even need to worry about having a choke? It won't be driven in cold weather. And I do not yet know if this is a "J" type manifold, which I guess would be the one to look for.

Thanks all,

Rick

If it is a BB manifold that one is correct configuration for a 66 425 engine....the 4bbl used a divorced choke with quadrajet.....measure width to be sure it is a BB manifold or maybe numbers can be run on 442.com

Manifold

Rick, the manifold in the Craigslist ad has the divorced choke with it. That would put it 1969 or older. I don't know if the choke to carb rod is different lengths between 1966-69 but I believe you could get a quadrajet carb of the vintage of the intake and have a good setup. For that price, I'd buy it and then figure out what carb would work. Just the divorced choke coil is half the price he's asking for the manifold! John
