I'm planning on replacing the intake manifold gaskets on my 394. Got a couple of questions and any advise is welcomed.
Should the bolts, studs and nuts be replaced with new? What is the best gasket to use and to use or not to use sealer?
I plan on having the manifold checked for flatness and machined if needed and also to make sure there are no cracks/holes.
The turkey pan gasket was replaced during the recent failed repair.


What is it that I'm doing wrong when ever I do a search I get a page saying there are no results. Then I write up my problem and after I post I scroll down and see a bunch of threads relating to what I had just posted about?

I now read through most of the posts and see most of what I asked about have already been answered. So I apologise if I've bothered anyone.

Don't bother getting new hardware. Oldsmobile didn't use TTY fasteners until the very end. You can get an intake manifold gasket from Fusick, but you MAW check your local auto parts store. Fel Pro MS 9549 SH is the one you need.

Thanks for the reply. I had already gotten a set from Fusick awhile ago.
I got into it today and there defiantly was leaking going on. The garage I had brought it to really did an abortion job. Everyone of the bolts and nuts were all uneven in tightness and one of the nuts I had to put a box wrench on the end of my ratchet to break it loose. The gasket at the area of the cross over was crystallized, is that normal, because it was all deteriorated? The surface of the manifold had in a few areas gouges from someone's scraping tool. Some areas still had the old gasket that was never removed, And the gaskets were sealed on both sides, always fun scraping that stuff off ha ha. People weren't kidding about that thing being heavy.

Here's a google search you can use. Type it into the google search box. It will just search the specific site for the items you specify.
In the example below it will search the classicoldsmobile.com site for the terms 394, intake, manifold, gasket

Originally I was going to try to do the job myself but never having done one before I'd let an "expert"
(Rotondo Service Center) who was highly recommended do it and that way it would be guaranteed.

The machine shop I left the manifold with said it'd be done in a couple of days.
On the back side of the manifold in the middle there's a small tube welded on, Would you happen to know what it's for? I haven't seen it on other ones.

The search function on our website works ok, but you have to know exactly what you're looking for. Examples I've searched for:

Otherwise, I just use Google as mentioned.

The port on the bottom of your intake manifold is for the hot air choke. As I recall, I had this port welded closed on the 394 in my 64 98. I did an electric choke conversion on the 4GC carburetor. If you don't have the hot air choke hooked up it is a small exhaust leak.
