acording to olds faq's there was #772 442 produced in 72 and #624 hurst/o
produced and the number of both combined is 814, W-30's in 1972
772 for the 442 and 42 for the husrt/olds
would like to know the value of this motor or any other facts about it like maybe wich car did it come out of 442 or H/o
I can tell you that the block did NOT come from a W-30. The number you have posted is the VIN derivative from the block. The "X" in the VIN derivative designates the assembly plant, which in this case is Fairfax, KS. Only full size cars were built at Fairfax, so it is impossible for this block to have been built up as a W-30. Additionally, all W-30 motors were built in Lansing, so the third character of the VIN derivative MUST be the letter "M".

You are confusing the VIN derivative with the VIN on the car. In 1972 the fifth character of the VIN indicates the engine. THAT'S where you need to look for the "X" that indicates the W-30 option. It is not possible to tell from the VIN derivative if a block is a W-30 motor (but you CAN prove that it is not a W-30, as seen here).

Joe P summed it up nicely. It is provably NOT a factory W30 motor.

Olds FAQ has errors, this is one of them

by 1972, ONLY W30's got the 2.072" valves, I believe. Not even the Toro's. But, all the big blocks used Ga castings. Therefore, big-valve Ga heads are exceedingly rare, and small-valve Ga heads are the norm, like you have.

Anyone "can make" BV Ga heads by fitting larger valves.

You realize, don't you, that you're posting in a thread that last had activity more than 2.5 years ago?

Nope, haven't learned to spot that info on the screen yet.
Slipped right past me
I look at the suggested topics of a related nature that appear at the bottom of the screen. If it looks like I can help or contribute, I check it out.

Maybe time to learn how to spot that date info. God forbid it should be large and eye catching.

Then again, all that info is still relevant to folks researching G and Ga heads, so....

That's OK. It happens to the best of us.

I've found by far the best way to use this site is to make sure you're logged in and then click on the "New Posts" link at the top of the page. That will show you all the threads that have gotten new postings since the last time you logged on. That way you know you're only looking at threads that are currently active.

Of course, if you're looking for info on something particular, using the Search function is very helpful, but then you have to remember that you'll be finding all threads containing the search term, new ones as well as old.
