“Ninety Eight” script removal by rear bumper on ‘72
I’m doing a little work on rust spots on rear quarters and need to remove the “Ninety Eight” scripts. It looks like their legs are almost like rivets inside the trunk; see pics
. How should I remove so I can reinstall when done? Thanks

From my experience with similar trunk scripts they are in fact a kind of rivet. I have removed some before that were loose already and forced some out by striking the ends of them from the inside of the panel but then you run the chance of enlarging the corrseponding hole. Not sure if there is a non-destructive way to do it. Good luck.

They were originally installed with what's called a Tinnerman nut that screwed onto the mounting studs. Those look like they may have been removed before and the studs broke, and they were either glued back on or may have been installed using barrel clips.
You can try two things. First, use a small plastic hammer to see if you can tap them out from inside the trunk, or get a stiff bladed putty knife or plastic trim removal tool and see if you can pry them off from outside the car. You can get either at Harbor Freight.
*edit* Looks like someone's been in there before and there's some body filler in the panel. It may be thick enough to have caused issues remounting the script.

Thanks All. This car, which I love, is definitely only a "driver". It has PLENTY of blemishes. I'll do my best not to add to those blemishes. Just want to slow the progression of rust. Thanks again!!!
