Removing upper control arm bushings on a 70 442

Removing upper control arm bushings on a 70 442

Anybody know of a source to get an equivalent tool to the Front upper control arm bushing remover. It was a kent moore J-9502-3. Or how did you remove the bushings and reinstall them. I have a press but am having trouble find a washer that I could cut to insert around the bar.

I used the open end of a combination wrench that was a snug fit against the "bump" on the pivot rod on the UCA. It worked well for removal. I have a pic around somewhere and can dig it up if needed.

Or just go to any chain auto parts store and "rent" one for free.

The easy (albeit, messy) way is to just burn the rubber out with at torch and dent the remaining shell to loosen it. I use a deep socket to press the new bushings in. A piece of angle iron cut to fit between the legs of the control arm prevent crushing by the press.

After wire brushing the sleeve and lubricating with light oil like WD40, I have removed them with a blunt tipped air chisel.

2 cautions:

Be sure to support the arms due to the fact that bend easily.

And, be sure the bushing starts strait - if it does not, you will damage it.

That is messy and smelly. What about using a 1/2" drill to remove the rubber? I did that with the bushings on the rear control arms and it worked like a charm. I saw this video about how to do it and it inspired me to try that. Works the same for control arm bushings.

That will work also. Pretty much anything that removes the rubber to relieve the compression on the ID of the steel sleeve will work.

I was surprised at how easy it was, following that video. Good thing I do have a 1/2" drill with variable speed. My bushing cases were pretty close to welded in there with rust around the outside edges. Took a bit (I mean a LOT) of persuasion even after denting in the casings.
