1984 Cutlass Calais vs. 1985 Buick Grand National

I have a cutlass calais with an olds 307. I'm looking to get something a lot faster. There is a Buick Grand national that I could trader for, there is also a motor from a grand national with the turbo for sale. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Can the 307 compare to the v6 turbo of the grand national?

Back in 1987, while attending the OPC Nationals in Boardman, OH, I had occasion to end up at a red light next to a GN. We gave each other "the glance". The light turned green and that GN disappeared so fast I was nearly in tears. I kept thinking how much I'd like to have one of those.

A couple years ago I saw an ad for an 83 H/O with a GN powertrain. The best of both worlds! You gotta do what's right for you. The GN would be very tempting to me.

Even a BUILT 307 would have a tough time keeping up with the GN. Whether you want to change cars or go for the motor swap is purely up to you and how much work you want to do. A turbo Cutlass would be interesting...

How about the GN drivetrain
in the Cutlass. You could say
after the ***-kicking, I don't know
why the hood won't open...

I'm obviously a Cutlass fan, but the GN is one of the most desirable cars of that period.

I would love to have a GN too. A friend of mine had one when new. It was sick how it would just annihilate the rear tires without much effort.

A few small mods on those things and they are easily in the 11's and 12's. Still would spank a lot of new cars made today.

GN's are plagued with electrical problems, that could be one reason the guy want's to get rid of his... beware.

1985 Buick Grand National

This is before the intercooler and is a much different animal. Intercooler debuted in '86 and that is when the rubber really met the road.

GN vs Cutlass

GN will still smoke the Cutlass. I have an 86 and am thinking of swapping out the 403 for a GN 3.8. Had one and they rock!
