Correct color air cleaner?

What is the correct color air cleaner for a 66 Cutlass with a 330-4BBL? Mine is black but I have seen a few with red air cleaners.

We had a 67 and it was black too. I've seen some that were sort of orange-red too. One that stands out is the Ramrod 350. It was that flame color and instead of decals, it was stenciled in white paint right from the factory.

I'm just wondering, and others on this forum are more expert at this, but maybe the 442 was the car that got the flame colored air cleaner?? Or maybe it was just on some model years but not others.

Anyway, If your air cleaner is black and just needs to be freshened up, go ahead and do it. If you need replacement decals or parts there's lots of aftermarket places that can set you up right. If you need a list just yell.

Hi there; I believe the '66 four barrel carb breathers are red as are '67, '68 & '69...two barrel carbs had black breathers...

'65-'67 442 all were chome. '65 snorkel on passenger side. '66-'67 auto were the same with snorkel on drivers side. Late '67 autos were snorkel less, and had a smaller base so it was "open" all the way around at the bottom. '66-'67 stick cars got the chrome lid open element unit.

Not sure what you mean by flame colored? '68-'69 were red/orange color as were all the big block air cleaners.

you will need zoom....I hope this pic helps you...

this picture taken from '67 assembly manual. I think 66 or 67 is similar. If your engine is Low comp. Your air cleaner is black. If your engine is High comp. air cleaner is Red. When High compression, in the top of air cleaner there is a stripe. If sais "Premium fuel" your engine is High comp.

Like monzaspyder79 say, low compression black, and high comp red.
All '66 330 2bbls are low and black, have "Oldsmobile Jetfire" labels.
'66 330 4-bbls are high (red) and low (black), both have "Oldsmobile Cutlass" labels, the high compression versions also say "Ultra High Compression".

I have been messing with this damned color situation on my extra 66 air cleaner for the last month or 2 (I have shot it with about 5 different colors), and the closest color I have found is a Rustoleum color called "Paprika" satin, part #249068.
It's not red, and it is NOT orange, but in between.
It looks nice, just a little bit lighter than the heat singed 65 air cleaner I have.
Anyone else have a suggestion on this?
Jim

As nice as that looks, and it really does look good, it just seems too much like Chevy orange (or even Hemi orange) for my taste.
I'll try to do some pic's by the weekend.

66 Air cleaner

Here's more fuel to feed the fire. This is a 66 Cutlass restored and dressed up a bit (valve covers). Took extra pics of the engine bay for you.

What is that air cleaner off of? Looks very different from my 66. Also did some 66's come with body color firewall or is that just something they did on that one?

Richard, I have no idea. I am not well versed on the older models as you are. I took a look at Snowdogs post and you're right. It's not the same. What it came from? I guess I'll have to ask next time I see the car. I had originally toyed with the idea of changing the air cleaner on my car to the red/orange color for visual appeal but decided to stay with stock black since it came off the line that way.
Also did some 66's come with body color firewall or is that just something they did on that one?
Sounds like a question for the forum? I really don't know. There are lots of "restos" that get the body color in the engine bay. Whether that's because of customer request or part of complete detail resto, I would only confirm if I knew for sure. I know that my 72 is black in the engine bay. And I'm not putting in the fake red wheel liners to dress it up. The car never came with them so they're not changing from the stock black ones. A little bit of cleanup and detailing should be able to get them to 2+ condition.

That air cleaner is indeed not correct for any '66 F-85 series motor. The label however is correct for a HC 4-bbl 330 and should be red.

No body color firewalls. Just a restoration error or preference.

Okay, but how about a PCV valve? (just kidding you!)

Not positive (yet), but I believe that the '65 330s should have a vacuum line from the backside base of the carb running to the drivers side valve cover. Inline is the PCV. If you don't have that, what makes you sure that it wasn't originally there?

PCV was used on California cars only in 65.

GM did paint firewalls body color, in Canada. If you have a Oshawa built car the firewall should be painted body color.

WELLLL< > now that would explain this. The picture was taken at the Olds car show in Olds Alberta, CANADA. So this is probably one of those cars built in Oshawa??

No problemo. Consider it pay back correcting my wrong post on 65 rear seat belts.

We all get better when we challenge each other. (with knowledge, not BS, I mean)
That is what makes forums a powerful tool when used appropriately.

re: Correct color air cleaner?

When I was cleaning up our 64 330 4bbl air cleaner so I could repaint it, all the Chevy orange paint came off exposing the original red color. Dupli Color Chrysler Industrial Red engine paint is pretty close to what was there.
