Cutlass sx questions

I am currently working on a 1970 cutlass convertible and have a few questions about it. I am not that familiar with oldsmobiles, so please bear with me.
First off the badging on it says it is a sx, what does this mean?
Secondly I was told that the car came from the factory as a cutlass body with an engine and drivetrain from a 442, the only problem with this is that it has an automatic transmission not a 4 speed like the 442, but it does have a 4 barrel and dual exhaust. Is it possible that this cutlass left the factory as I was told, or is it a load of crap?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome and congratulations on a rare car! Only 793 SX convertibles built in 1970.

SX was a "highway cruiser". It actually should have come with a 2 barrel carb,455, duals with the cut-out rear bumper, and some other "fun" stuff.

Check out www.sx455.com

What does the SX badge mean you ask? It means you should sell me your car!(just kidding) I owned a '70 SX nearly 30 years ago, and foolishly sold it out of desperation. My goal is to get another one and hang on to it. I think they are more desireable than 442's, since they were only produced for 2 years and, like your convertible, are pretty rare. Would like to see some pictures of your machine.

Thanks for the info. I will try to get some pics posted pretty soon. I just got done ordering a catalog from opgi, anyone know of any other good catalogs for the cutlass? The cutlass is going to need a lot of work, I have a sneaking suspicion it is a rust bucket under the 15 year old bondo, but I know it will be worth it when Im done.

The SXes are great cars - enjoy it. Most 442s were actually *not* 4 speeds, so you could in fact have a 442 drivetrain but only if your car is a W-32 (4 barrel, and will have the 'OG' TH400 trans).

I am one of the co-founders of www.sx455.com and you will find a lot of good info on there. Please register the car there as well if you haven't already. The Y-79 SX Performance Package gave you a choice of three 455s in 1970, as well as the cutout rear bumper/exhaust trumpets. Everything else was optional.

Thanks for the help. This website and www.sx455.com have really turned out to be good resources for information on the cutlass. So far this is what I know about the car: The engine is a 455 (as indicated by the letter “F” above the timing chain cover) with a 4 barrel carb. It has an automatic transmission. The original color of the body is golden-brown and the top was white. The interior color is also white. It also has factory a/c.

I have a 70 SX W-32 convertible which sounds nearly identical to yours. I was lucky enough to find a portion of the build sheet in the rear seat springs. This verified that it came with the w-32 package (TV engine and OG transmission) as well as the Y79 (SX) option. My car is bronze with white buckets. It is currently in the body shop getting the full spa treatment.
