Rear view mirror wiring

I have a 70 Cutlass convertible with a map light on the bottom of the mirror. The wire running to the light is bad. Anyone know how I can get inside the mirror to rewire it?

Likely you'll have to remove the grey mirror trim and then the mirror glass to get inside the case itself. Are you sure it's the wire and not the bulb that needs replacing?

Thank you for your reply. I have a dead short in the car on that circuit. The wire as it goes into the mirror has the insulation worn off

I lust had mine apart. The wire has a snap in "bullet" looking connection that will pull out of a plastic socket on the top of mirror. I used a pic and gently got it out of the socket. Then under the mirror you can grab the plastic lens with you fingers and work it off. Then you can squeeze the slider switch in the middle where the lens was and release the whole switch. Then you can see its just a simple brass contact that grounds on one side as you slide the switch to the mirror case, and slides over the "bullet" on the other side. Its a lot easier to do this on a bench w/mirror out of car. Mine wasn't working but just needed cleaning up now works good.

Just be careful with the gray plastic slider as they become brittle with age. I have extra mirror map light parts if you do you need anything.

It's a lot of work to remove the mirror wiring intact from its Fisher connection under the left side dash. Did you cut the gray wire and then work on the bench or did you already have the interior dis assembled? Last one of these I removed, the front windlass, front headliner and left side A pillar had to come off.
