1968 442 rear axel ratio

Hello.

New member from Norway.
I am working on a 1968 442.The rear axel is stamped R2,no date code.I know this correspond to a 2,56:1 ratio, but was this axel ever an option on the 442 or has it been installed later?

It was standard in the '68 442 with automatic transmission either M-31 or M-40 unless ordered with an upgrade.

I looked in a -68 salesman guide or whatever the called the book, and the way I understood it the 2,56:1 ratio was the standard axel on a 442 with the L65 option.
Other than this unavailable as an option on a 442.

Is this right or wrong?

Not sure jankyrre but other '68 guys will chime in. I will add that about a quarter century ago, I was second owner of an original-condition Saffron '68 442 with automatic for a short while and it had a 3.08 rear.

I think the 2.56 was standard on the 442 with Turnpike Cruiser option.
3.08 would be standard with the regular 442 & automatic trans.

You are correct Jankyrre

Like Copper128 says above. According to the assembly manual the 2.56 was ONLY available on the Turnpike Cruiser Option for a 442. It was not available on any other 442 tranny combinations
(Look at the Assembly Manual, Section 4, Page 104)

Thank you guys.

Do I actually have a TC.
Is there any way to find out?The car still have the original engine and transmission. The trans.is marked OH.
And yes it have a 2bbl.carb.,but I am certain this was install later.
Carb.from a 69 350.The number is 7029156
The intake is marked H casting nr.388625
The aircleaner also seems to be from a 350.

I know about the sticker on the oil filler tube, but that is gone.

OH was only used on the Turnpike Cruiser. Does the partial VIN on the tranny match the car VIN? If so you have a documented TC.

The air cleaner has OE silk screened on it and it is the same air cleaner as the 350 2 bbl.

A TC 442 is nothing to be bummed about.
Enjoy it
Should be more economical to operate
