Correct. That is a Chevy axle, which was factory installed in Cutlii built in Canada that year. US-built Cutlii got the Type O axle with the smooth cover. The body data plate will say MADE IN CANADA if it was.

12 bolt chevy rear
Yes again on the chevy rear and also it does appear to be original to the car as it does have the BOP yoke with u-bolts. If it were out of a chevy it would have a large or small yoke with 4 bolts and 2 strap u-joint retention.
At least you have a rear diff you can get parts for under the car. Good luck, Jim

I know this is really petty, but it is Cutlasses, not Cutlii. And a Cutlass is a Cutlass, not a Cutty. Just an unimportant concern of mine.

12 bolt 10 bolt
NO not all had 12 bolt rears f85 had stock 10 bolt rears... 442 american made cutlass II ES what ever had 12 bolt 'O' type and the canadian built ones came with 12 bolt chevy non posi...BUT all this info is taken with a grain of salt as just about anything by now could be under the car and even from the factory seems like anything could have been installed too... lol. Jim
If you post pictures of your cars diff cover area we can ID the rear for you so you can buy parts for it. OF you can try the jdrace.com ID differential section and compare yours to the pictures and info I have posted. Jim

I think mine is a 10 bolt 'O' type if that is possible. I will take a picture and put it up so you guys can identify it. Is a 10 bolt worth rebuilding and keeping under my car? I plan on spending the money to rebiuld it and make it posi as I think I have some pretty small gears in there. Or should I look for a 12-bolt? What is the difference between and 10-bolt and 12-bolt other than the carrier size?

First, ALL the US-built 1968 Cutlii (take THAT, Kurt...) came with ten bolt ring gears. Some came with 12 bolts on the rear cover. That doesn't make them a 12-bolt axle. Contrary to popular belief, 10 bolt and 12 bolt refer to the ring gear bolts. On Chevy axles that just happens to correspond to the number of cover bolts.
