Bought a 3.23 Posi for my 69 Cutlass

I responded to an ad last night and went to buy a 3.42 1970 olds posi differential. It was apart and needed to be re-built. I counted the teeth and divided and it was in fact a 3.23. Long story short the seller sold me the 3.23 for six hundred and he is sandblasting, replacing the bearings with timkin, and setting it for another $200, so I'm finished at a total of $800. I think I got a good deal and that the car will be quite a bit more highway friendly than if I had ended up with the 3.42 that I went to buy. Did I overpay or is this a fair price for a 1970 SF Code 3.23 posi? Seemed fair to me. - Steven

One of the calculators that has been posted showed that my RPM with my size of tire will be about 3,000 at 70MPH and with the 3.42 it would have been more like 3300. I plan to do some highway driving and I think the 3,000 RPM is much more desirable. I'm okay with trading some quickness with what I think is a better highway cruising RPM.

That sounds about right.
If memory serves. Running
225 70 14's, and using the
69 tic tock tach. Seems about 3K or a little over.

My wheels are 16" and tires are 225/55 but it works out to about the same.

It sounds like you did OK. If he replaces ALL of the bearings & seals, including the axle bearings/seals,he will have close to $200.00 without labor. It sounds like the posi is getting left alone, not rebuilt, which should be fine for a driver,as long as the previous history is good, and the existing clutches are not toast.
If he is blasting it,make sure it is all assembled or sealed-up,or he will have a hard time getting media out.If it is already apart,I would take the housing to the local machine shop, and have it hot-tanked,then it can be blasted as a bare housing without anything getting stuck anywhere.

Brian...
I think he felt some obligation because it was a 3.23 and not a 3.42. He said the parts would cost close to $200 and that he was basically doing the labor for free. I visited with him for at least an hour and I think he will do a good job. The gears themselves looked great. He said that built right the differential should outlive the rest of the car. The other works in-progress in his shop were clearly top-notch work. I'm confident in him and I think I'll be pleased with the 3.23 ratio. Thank you for the professional recommendations/insight. - Steven
