Help with 10 bolt rearend

I cut this rear from a 69 Cutlass S that has been in a junkyard since the early 80s. Not sure what this rear is out of. No code on the axle. Has 3.36 gears with date code 4/68. 9792977 casting number with D038 above it. Any help is appreciated.

That's an 8.2" BOP 10-bolt,cast on April 3rd,1968,and would have gone in a real late 68 car,or an early 69. This would have originally came in a Buick Skylark/GS,or Pontiac Lemans/GTO,as Olds do not use these in 68/69,and Chevy has a different version. There are posi units available for this, from Auburn & Eaton.

OK, thanks for the info. I didnt think this was a Olds rearend. I already have a posi rear built for my car. Used a 72 cutlass rearend.

THat rear will not be found in any 1968 69 or 70 buick from the factory. Pontiac rear for sure because of the carrier caps. Olds or Pontiac use in those years only. Buick used there own rear in 68-70.

Just trying to narrow it down for your use. If any. Would be a great ratio for all around performance in any v8 car. Jim

I am guessing it has converging ribs on the sides = Pontiac
Definitely wasn't from a 68 Oldsmobile originally, since they either came with the 12-bolt O-axle,or the Canadians with the 12-bolt Chevy.

I did finally find a code on the axle tube (Driver side toward the front of car) and its a WG, which is Pontiacs code for 3.36 open.

Can't narrow it down much more than that.
