Rear end identification and parts.

Is this a type o axle?
Is there any diffs and gears available for it?
Could a 3.42 rear be a good setup for a th400?
best regards from sweden.

Yes, that should be the factory Type O 8.5" differential. Only 3.42 and 3.90 gears are available aftermarket and need the 3.08/3.23 carrier to use them. The aftermarket posi are modified 8.8 Ford units. If you are Ok with 3000+ rpm highway cruising, depending on tire height and highway speed limits, you are good to go.

No, different thickness and I believe 31 spline vs 28 spline axles. A 3.42 is a good ratio, depends what you are comfortable with and where you drive the car. I want overdrive with that gearing, just my preference as everything is a long trip on the Canadian Prairies. Good luck.

thank you, Will look for another axle then..
If I do find a 3.08 axle will the aftermarket diff fit right in?

Yes, that is the carrier they chose for whatever reason for the aftermarket modified Ford 8.8 posi in the aftermarket. This only pertains for the 12 bolt cover, 10 bolt ring gear Type O 8.5".

14 A 39 = 2.7857

Oldsmobile rounded down and called that a 2.78:1 ratio.
