Question '54 Olds Ring Job & classic Olds memorabilia

How difficult a job is replacing the rings in a 324 engine? Can it be done with the motor in the car or does it have to be removed?

I'd like to find someone to do mine this spring, and I'm interested in how complex a job this would be and about what I should expect it to cost.

On a side note - does anyone know who sells classic Olds memorabilia such as die-casts, signs and such? There seems to be precious few places to get anything related to 50's era Olds. Even e-Bay doesn't have much to offer

Is this the same "blue smoke" car from a while back?

Are we to presume that you did the valve job and it's still smoking?

Yes, this is the same car. I haven't done anything to the motor yet because it's so darned cold here. I was going to wait until Spring before I attempted anything.

OK, as far as how complex of a job this is, it's not really that hard for anyone with the equipment and space, and experience.

As far as cost, this is where it gets dicey.

If you can pull the engine yourself, then pull the heads your self, pay someone to do the valve job , disassemble the lower end yourself, Then pay a machine shop to bore /hone your cylinders, then put it all back together correctly, with help, then install the engine and tune/time it yourself, it's gonna cost about $1000.

IF NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE ENGINE BESIDES NORMAL WEAR.

If something is wrong (cracked head, whatever) get ready to party.

I did this job last year on a '56 324, and the damn lifters were $12 a pop (and theres 16 of them). If thats any indication of parts cost.

If you get in a jam, give me a yell, good luck, Jeff +4

Yea, I figured this wasn't going to be easy (or cheap.) I'm pretty sure it's just rings and nothing else major, but you never really know until you get in there.

Too bad there isn't an oil additive that would do the trick and actually worked

Yeah, I hear ya Kevin.

Speaking of oil, though, if you get a line on a "new" oil pump for this engine on your travels with the '54 rebuild, let me know, Thanks,
