Bosch tach install 67 442

Bosch tach install 67 442
After buying my 67 Sport Coupe 2 yrs ago I have been slowly eliminating my to do list. One was to install a tach. I had done a similar install back in 1981 when I built a 1963 Jeep CJ5 with a walnut dash and a 67 Cutlass dash plastic section using a Tasco mini tach. This time I chose a Bosch unit which blended better with the factory gauges. This turned out so simple I decided to share the install process. So here we go. Bosch FST 7906 2 5/8" tach. Factory clock delete housing and dial face.
The depth of the delete housing is critical so that when installed it contacts the back of the metal dial face, so remember that. Slice off the face of the clock housing the thickness of the rubber gasket that comes with the tach after removing the plastic face ring which will not be used.
The rubber ring will now fit into the clock housing. Unscrew the 2 screws holding the tach internal mechanism from the Bosch housing and remove it from the housing. Now scribe a line 1 1/2" from the front edge of the Bosch housing, tape as a guide and cut it off. To do this cutting I used an Exacto saw that I had from my modeling days.
Now sand/file the diameter of the back of the housing until it fits into the clock delete housing, and remount the tach mechanism to it and slide into the clock housing making sure it is rotated correctly. One of the holes in the delete housing is at the 12 oclock position when mounted to the pc board, so line up the tach accordingly. Hint the tach light socket should be inline with this screw hole. Slide in until the tach metal dial face is about 1/16" away from the rubber gasket. This space is needed to allow light to shine on the face.
If you had a nice fit a couple drops of glue will hold it in place. I chose to drill and tap 2 small button head screws thru the side just to make it removable. Now simply slide the whole unit thru the back of the pc board and mount with the 3 factory screws. Re install the metal gauge cluster face plate and speedometer surround and hook up the wiring. Actually you would never have to even remove the speedometer surround or metal gauge cluster face to do this install I only did it to get measurements which I am giving here.
I also chose not to install the glass lens on fear of getting glare from looking thru it and the factory lens. Also I cut the wiring and fastened a weather pac connector for ease of removal of the tach.
So hope this was helpful. Simple install with no hacking of the original dash. The only drawback is not being able to use the red pointer for redline.

Awesome. Glad it worked out for you as well as it did for me. Looks great. I did like the idea of a previous post where they took the center chrome piece of the needle and mounted it for a more factory look. Don't know if that was feasible with this install or not. Anyhow glad I could contribute. Happy motoring.

No idea if they dim or not, I never tried to dim them, I just assumed the switch controlled the dimmer not the bulb. I wanted brighter look and thats what I got. I will have to try it out after dark.
