Internal vs external regulation

Hello what is the difference between external and internal regulation? I guess the real question is when figuring out which wire harness I want to use I noticed that one has the wires that go to the voltage regulator on the wall and my other does not have the wires. If I use the one without the wires to the wall regulator do I need an internally regulated alternator? Hope I didn't confuse anyone

I had to go back in your history to see what we were working on! 1970 Cutlass S. Factory would be wires headed back to the firewall to the external regulator.

I guess the next question would be which style alternator do you have and which way you do want to go?

The left alternator is an internal the right is an external. The difference looking at them is the position of the pins on the 2 pin connector.

The difference is that externally regulated alternator requires a voltage regulator and internal doesn't.

Before swapping over to internal regulator with a plug and play "kit", read this post.
I ran across the EXACT same issue over at one of the corvette boards.
Either will work if wired correctly.

I made a clarification to your post.
