1971 4-4-2 grill numerals - opinions please

Originality?

or slight modification?

I’m leaning towards red on black.
Other thoughts?

Appreciate all the fabulous knowledge on here!

That is example of 71 (black numerals) vs 72 (red numerals) standard colors so IMO I like the originality of each being unique to their year.

The problem is the last photo where there are red 1972 numerals on a black-painted 1971 grill. The 72 grills were silver with black surrounds, the opposite of the 71 grills.

Thanks guys. I have owned both 71 and 72s, and I’ve always felt like the black numerals on the black 71 grill are lost and don’t pop. They are very subtle and hard to see, and that’s OK, that’s how it was drawn up in Lansing.

The 72 grill, red numerals on silver background, always looked better to me. And I’ve seen more than a few 71s with red numerals placed on their black grills - so I was looking for opinions. I know that it’s not original

Actually, the best looking custom numerals I've seen on a 71 grill were painted tri-color to match the early 442 emblems.

I had to do it so I went with the 72 numbers on my 71 and I think they look pretty darn good. I’ll keep the 71 numbers and swap them when I have it judged by Olds experts.
Now if I could only get that front bumper perfect 😆👍

Tri color would look amazing. I saw a post from Joe previously describing the colors used with the early tricolor emblem - I may have to buy a third set of numbers to paint.
