1971 442 convertible
I gotta question. Are the sheet metal, doors, quarters, and fenders generic for all of the 1971 Cutlas models including the 442? I know the hood is different with the cowl but what about the doors and trunk lid specifically?

The doors and fenders are the same for all two doors. The various models do have different trim. Rear quarters are different by body style (Cutlass and 442 convertible, Cutlass S and 442 hardtop share a 1/4, Cutlass Supreme is unique to that model). Trunk lids also vary. The convertible Cutlass and 442 share a trunk lid with the four door Cutlass. The 2-door Supreme is unique to that car. The Cutlass S and 442 share a trunk lid.
Sheet metal will interchange from 70-72. The front fenders for 70s and early 71s is slightly different from later 71s and 72. The early fenders do not have crimps along interior top for crash crumple. The early ones are more expensive as they were not available from GM as service parts since very early in the 70s and are not reproduced.

The Supreme and the convertible have different part numbers for the 1/4 panels. However, I believe they are substantially the same with the exception of the the area at the top well of the convertible. If this is incorrect, I am sure someone will correct this if necessary.

Everything I have read or seen about 71 convertibles, they all were built as supremes. Now there could be some differences thus different part numbers. I need new quarters and the repops seem to be the same for all conv. I do rememeber reading something about the rear wheelwells being different in a conv.?

Some of the reproduction companies assume you are going to cut the 1/4 below the top well. Therefore you can use the Supreme 1/4 panel on a convertible. Original GM 1/4s are different between Supreme and convertibles. There are some companies which now list the convertible quarter separate from the Supreme with a different part number.
The convertible wheelhouse is slightly different than a Supreme but the Supreme can be modified to work on the convertible.
