20th Anniversary

From "Oldsmobile: The Last Chapter," which was the 2005 follow-up to 1997's "Setting the Pace: Oldsmobile's First 100 Years" by Helen Jones Earley and James R. Walkinshaw.
The last car was actually made the day before and then was stored for the final roll down the assembly line on the 29th.

What's really sad is that it has now been so long since Oldsmobile's demise that you rarely see them on the road anymore. The newest ones are 20 years old, and that's old for a daily driver. Whenever I see any Olds on the road being used as an every day car, I try to take a photo of it if I can.
Speaking of which, I saw this in the parking lot of a local shopping center about a week ago. Not sure of the exact year. Late '70s/early '80s?
I don't know Burl, but I like his car.

I pulled up to my local Dunkin' in my white '65 and the kid at the window loved it!
He asked what it was and I told him an Oldsmobile.
His confused reply was simply , "What?"
I swear I could have said, "It's a 65 Ker-flobbin" and the look would have been the exact same.
He had never heard of the brand.

I've run into this, too, especially among younger people. A whole generation has been born and raised to adulthood now without new Oldsmobiles on the road.
I've even been looked at funny at the auto parts store. The younger staffers just don't encounter the brand much any more. Someone like me trying to restore one or someone trying to keep a 25-year-old Olds clunker on the road is a rare occurrence at the parts counter now. I've always found the younger ones eager to learn about the brand, and I tell them what I'm doing. They're always glad to help. But it's always a bit sad to have to explain about a brand that was, when I was their age, one of the best-selling brands in the country. In the 1970s, everyone knew what a Cutlass was. Now it's "Cutlass? Isn't that a sword of some kind?"

That's a 79 Cutlass Supreme Brougham, you can just barely make out the "thrown cushion" seats. I'm wondering if the hood, roof and trunk were all re-painted, it looks just too good for its age compared to the side of the car.
Nice photos! If you like that 79, I m-a-y be selling my 79 Brougham later this year, it's the one pictured in my moniker.
I too lament the fact that when I go on long trips I will more than likely see no Oldsmobiles on the road, 20 years removed is now a long time. The ones I usually see now really shouldn't be on the road.
