70-71 W25 OAI chrome Hood locks - Pin shift

Be sure to inspect your factory or reproduction chrome W25 hood locks- Inspect the little locking pin to ensure it is centered and does not move.. About 4 years ago one of my factory locking pins shifted and I could not open the hood.. After a hour or two of tapping on the hood, rotating the chrome lock, the pin shifted back into position just enough and the hood released. I repaired it, but latter on bought new left/right chrome locks about 2 years ago. Haven't had an issue, and would check them on occasion. It just so happen that Friday, while checking the car over before the Olds show, I checked one of them, and the pin shifted over and fell out (now lost someplace in the frame) . Had I not found this, it would have likely shifted over while driving and locked the hood..Again I repaired this one with a homemade pin and I might cross drill to the lock pin and put in pin to lock it…Need to do something so that the pins nevers move again...has this happened to anyone else...thanks

Yes, on the factory pins on my 70. Over time vibration causes the spring pins to move in the holes. You just have to check it periodically.

Not sure if this is a complete cure, but I put Locktite, on mine, have not had a problem.

I ended up bending mine just a bit, hard to see the bend but enough that they don't slide through anymore.

Red 272 permanent Loctite thread locker is designed for this type of thing. Let it cure. Add the set screw from the bottom with the 272 and it will stay put long after your ownership.
Cyanoacrylate (super glue) could work for a while but will eventually let go on this particular application.

Mine must have done that because I was driving got home and the whole chrome twist lock etc was gone...bought replacement from fusick, got it all on etc...but does not seem to reach down far enough or something (hard to see as the hood is almost closed by then) to go through mounting bracket to then twist shut? anyone else have this happen...thoughts?

put your phone video camera on and a light under the hood and close it to video what the lock pin is doing. Then you can see how to adjust.

so I took the mounting brackets off, and looked at them, and they were slightly, slightly bent...I think it was from not having the pins at the right angle so it hit when closing...have to be a 9 and 3 to fit down in there...other wise they collide.

also the replacements come with a big chrome washer scuff plate, and that adds to much thickness for the pins to fit down in the mounting brackets.

Oftentimes the pins shift, left to right due to vibration, and that causes them not to fit the slot at the bracket correctly. Keep playing with it and when you get it just right squirt a little penetrating Loctite on the pin, let it dry, and that will stabilize it.

See previous posts # 1,2,6.7,9.
Hope this helps.....

I had the same problem. My left pin would work itself part way out. I couldn't open my hood. I could actually reach up from underneath and push it back in. I finally used a glue on it to hold it in place.
