An overdrive would be nice with 3.42's but you may not like the drivability of the 700 with that combo. It has a really low 1st gear good for getting off the line with lower numerically gearing, but a little too low for yours. Also, you'll likely need an adaptor for a non-chevy application. Have you thought of a 200 r4 with a B O P pattern?

So you are saying that 3.42 gear wouldn't be a good match with the 700r and yes I have thought about a 200r4 they charge almost double to bulid a good 200r4 than the 700r I want to be able to ride the highway because now my rpm is at 3000 at 60 mph

Check your tach, you should be lower than those rpm's @ 60 mph. I was running 3.42's in my '71 Supreme, and was turning 3200 @ 70 mph with a new tach.

I have a 700R4 with a stock 330 in my 67. I just put a 4.10 rear gear under the car. With 27 inch tall tires and the converter in lockup, I am at 2300 rpm at 60 mph. My spreadsheet predicts you would be at 1850 with 26 inch tires and 3.42 gears using a 700R4

A 2004r shouldn't be twice as much as a 7004r to build, both transmissions need a lot of work to live behind a healthy V8. I don't like the idea of having to use an adapter plate with the 700 when the 200 will bolt right on. I did a 2004r in my 65 with a 3:90 gear and it works great. Can't tell you much about RPM's as I wouldn't trust my stock Olds tach any farther than I could throw it.
