Hello experts,

Putting a plaque together for the next car show on my 1970 Cutlass S. I have tried to research what an average cost of a new one sold for in 1970 but have no luck.

Any input?

A total of 10,762 Cutlass Supreme four-doors were built for 1970. They weighed in at hefty 3,662 lbs. and had a $3,226 base price. For some reason, Cutlass Supreme sales dipped markedly for 1970. Less than 27,000 were built

The Supreme was the top tier Cutlass, whereas the S was a mid tier model and therefore lower priced. But keep in mind that pricing at all tiers was dependent upon optional equipment.

The 1970 info kit available from GM Heritage Center as a free download has the SPECS booklet that has the MSRP and option prices. It also has various dealer pricing sheets that may have updated prices. Scroll through the whole document.

The reason for low production is there was a UAW strike in 1970 that lasted months. In addition to lower production, 1970 was the last year of the true hi-performance muscle car era, making 1970 the preferred year for the A-Body vehicle of the early ‘70’s.

I sent away for that packet decades ago, through the mail, and it included price sheets and lots of information about the 1970 Oldsmobile. From adding up all the options my car has I figured out that my 4 door Cutlass, optioned out like most of them(air, lighting group, deluxe interior, AM radio, etc) topped a hefty $5000 retail. If I remember right there were 38,000 Cutlass V8 four doors built for 70.

I would imagine the S would be a tad less. Two less doors to worry about.

In 1970 we bought a new CS for $3200.00. Back then, this one was a lot of money and we had to finance it.

In 1970, the Cutlass Supreme Convertible listed for $3,325, without options. Only 4,867 were built making it relatively rare.

The 1970 UAW strike lasted from Sept. 14 to Nov. 23. Therefore it affected only 1971 model-year production.

My 70 442 retailed at over $5400......it has tons of options.

True, that strike affected the '71 model year. BUT, the 1969 - 1970 strike at the Fisher Body plant in Flint was the longest in GM history - 136 days. It started on September 29, 1969 - clearly in the 1970 production year.
