GM Canada Documents

The Canadian GM documents I got for my 69W30 car state the following information on production numbers:

Model number: 34487
Number imported for sale in Canada: (same model no. only) 47

So does that mean there was a total of 47 442 hardtops (34487) imported into Canada OR 47 442 hardtops that were ordered with the W30 option (34487)?

If it was 47 total hardtops (34487 syle) ordered into Canada. then I wonder how many had the W30 option ? Any ideas? Anyone?

I'd ask them! That is exactly the kind of reporting that can be subjective and lead to misinformation. More careful wording should be used.

heres mine,its a bit clearer on the model #, i had a few questions also so i called the place and talked to george himself, he was realy good, answered anything i asked.lets see a pic of yours. it sounds like yous cars also very rare. stan

The documents you get from GM Canada are only Canadian numbers. They don't take into account numbers sold in other countries.

I will post some pictures of the GM Canada documents for my cars later.

Interesting, the GM Canada paperwork I have for my 72 W30 car states the following:
Model number: 33687
Number imported for sale in Canada: (same model no.only) 8161 (128 w/W30)

That number is for the W30 cars imported into Canada (47)...which in this case is W30 hardtops cuz the regular 34487 cars were built in Oshawa... all the Cutlass or 442 converts whether W30 or W31 would be imports because Oshawa did not build any that year... 1969

I just talked to George Z at GM Vintage Vehicle Services in Canada about the information I was sent on my 69 W30 production numbers.

I asked him about the import numbers on the paperwork I received. The number 47 refers to the number of hard tops (34487) imported into Canada from the US. This number, 47 does not include any hard tops (34487) built in Oshawa, Ontario.

So, there was only 47 hard tops (34487) imported into Canada from all the plants that built them. (Fremont, CA; Lansing, MI and Linden, NJ)

He, George Zapora said they are unable to break down how many W30's hard tops (34487) were imported into Canada out of the 47.

What would an educated guess be? About how many 69 W30's hardtops (34487) were imported out of the 47 into Canada.

It means that 47 442 hardtops were ordered for Canada. How many of the 47 were W30's .....

For 1976 Cutlass S there were about 7,000 (don't have he sheet in front of me) were imported to Canada. Of that 1316 were 442's. (Don't know why they broke that down for me and didn't breakdown the W30's for you). I had to go to Helen Earley to find that of the 1316 imported to Canada, only 6 had the 455. That explains why I've never seen another one in person. Of all 1976 442's built, only 143 had the 455

Ken, I owe getting my first Olds to a car like yours. I bought a '66 442 in 1975. The po was trying to decide whether to build an engine to drop into the '66 or buy a new 442. He heard that '76 was going to be the last year for the 455, so he opted to buy a new 442 with a 455. Same color as yours too. I'm glad he did!

Kurt, mine was dumb luck. I looked at the car liked it and bought it. Did not know about the 455 being the last year or how many were stuffed into a 442. Helen told me around 1995, so I had owned the car 14 years before I found out. In the June 76 issue of Hot Rod they did a road test and the author said "We asked for the baddest 442 available, a 350 4bbl V8 (we asked for a 455 but were told that they are in very, very short supply). When I wrote to Olds they said they were unaware of a 455 shortage in 1976.... I didn't say there was a shortage...anyway Helen new what I was talking about.

I went for the GM documentation and it broke the numbers down for me at least on the model. If any of you guys have a Canadian built or sold car, contact GM Canada. The records they keep on these cars is impressive. Probably George Zapora will decode your car.
