Mainseal? rope vs lip

hi guys and girls. i'm trying to assemble this bottom end this week but still having an issue finding a lip seal. joe mentioned today an amc 258 is another possibility. i have used a rope seal in the past successfully. in fact i used a rope in this engine 38 years ago when i freshened up this mill the first time. so i'm really debating using the rope... or if i can get the proper 2 piece lip seal i'd rather. it's too big a job to do the rearmain if it leaks. so can anyone set the record straight? i talked to an old timer today and asked him about the 292 ford rear seal. he said those were leakers in the day. if an after market company has a listing on a lipseal made for a 69 350 rocket i would gladly courier it in. thanks again people. paul

Here are your choices, as far as I know them:

Rear Main Seal -- BS6141 -- Small Block Neoprene Ford Type (Y-Block 239, 256, 272, 292)
Rear Main Seal -- BS13879 -- Small Block Neoprene AMC / Jeep Type (196, 199, 232, 258)
Rear Main Seal -- QBS40032 -- Big Block Neoprene Ford Type (460)

I have a BS6141 seal in my 350 and it works fine.

They're Fell-Pro numbers, because that's a "standard" that any auto parts store can get or cross-reference.

If I'm not mistaken,NAPA actually has the neoprene rear seal listed for the BBO listed as an Olds application.
