Modified Toronado on Display in Victoria, BC

As soon as I saw this video from The Royal British Columbia Museum in my Facebook feed I thought the car oozed Toronado roots. Turns out that it does.

Facebook Post

This is one of four cars, dubbed the Esso 67-X, which Esso Oil commissioned George Barris to design for display at the 1967 Canadian Expo during Canada's Centennial celebrations. The four cars were awarded as prizes in a contest held by Esso and a fifth car was built by Barris for his own use.

I think I'll have to make my way into town to check it out before it leaves on March 12th!

That is cool and would be nice to see in person.

Just a few weeks ago we were discussing the Mannix Toro of which Barris modified, about that same time frame.

For review, Mannix was a late 60's private eye TV show where he often drove this Toro with the top chopped off, and who knows what else, by Barris.

That is a perfect example of a screwed up mess! Good grief my eyes are still burning. I didn't think anyone could make a Oldsmobile that fugly.

George Barris was not my favourite designer for sure. The term gaudy always comes to mind. This one seems to be one of his less gaudy though.

I am yet to see an early Toronado that looks better than when it left the factory.

One of the cars fairly complete was stored in a semi trailer near Champaign and sold on ebay a couple years ago.

I would have to agree. The original car definitely looked better. Not his best work by any means! A little to gaudy. Al

I can't say it's to my tastes either, but I'm more interested in the story behind it. How often do you see a corporation commissioning a limited series of custom cars for a give away these days? Or something that old created for display at a world exhibition combined with a national centennial?

I agree it was a good read.

That's cool. I would check it out if it were in a museum near me. I don't know if I would drive it every day though. It reminds me of the Excalibur and Stutz cars that were put out in the late 70s / early 80s.

The hood would be a nice touch on a stock Tornoado.
I like customs from the stand point of the skill required to build one.

I agree... always preferred Gene Winfield's take on customization.

Needs more scoops, scallops, peaks, & vents !

Yeah, it's weird looking by today's standards, but I recognize some of the design cues. Its a fascinating period piece.

I thought that there were six '67-X cars built. I saw one at an Esso gas station filling up in Niagara Falls 'bout twenty? years ago.
