i got a 1/2 inch roll pin (tension pin) and cut them to the length of the original ring. it worked just like the original ones.

Heh... reminds me of when my girlfriend at the time asked me how they worked. I wasn't exactly sure at the time.

I was sure her suggestion that "one's forward, one's reverse and one's just for show" was definitely wrong, though!
