That black car must be the same 8,000 mile original that i saw at Fall Hershey about eight years ago. It looked very original to me then. Also it's nice to see this car without the typical slew of options added later (OAI, wing, Custom Sport steering wheel, 8-crap tape deck).

Also found this one for sale on eBay. I've seen this car in person and it's beautiful! It's definitely 29k original. When I looked at it though it was at a different dealer, and they defiantly didn't want 25k. More like 14k. This guy is insane if he thinks he can get 25k for a 71 plain jane supreme. This car is identical to my first car, except mine had A/C.

IDK ,something seems kinda fishy about the first two cars ,how does one seller have two 1971 442's ,very similar in appearance and quality, and claimed original paint come into his possession?

Steven,
Both '70 & '71 could have had the halo top. In '72 it went away.
It has '72 grills & early to mid '80's wheels? Also a '70 passenger fender?? It was made in 3 of '71, I know some early '71 cars could have had the '70 fenders, but not sure about a car made in March? Still a nice car though despite my nit picking.

Nice catch on the 70 fender Scott, I even seen the car in person and I missed that! That would probably explain the 72 grills then. The car was probably hit at one point in its life.

What's interesting to me about both those 442s is the placement of the side stripes, as they are reported to be original. As I asked before in a previous thread, I was wondering the correct distance between the 442 numbers on the fender and the start of the first pin stripe. Both these seem closer than you usually see on restored cars. Also, the biggest variation is how high up the stripe is on the forward portion of the front fender above the side marker light. Also, they are very level. Most painters place the stripes farther down and follow the character line of the fender. This will help me when my 71 442 is painted next year. Thanks for pointing these cars out to us. Its unfortunate, in my opinion they both came with manual drum brakes, but that's what you received if you didn't order power brakes. Another notable item on the black 442 is the original pin stripe whitewalls, which was standard for a non-W30 442. On any regular Cutlass you got blackwalls. You certainly don't see these whitewalls at car shows. Sometimes, the lack of options, and performance options, ie., the regular hood, has it's own charms. I love the centre hood stripe and "Oldsmobile" on the hood, again something we don't see very often. Beautiful cars.

I compared the stripes on the black car, and my car and at least in the pics they're pretty close. I just hope they come out the same when my car gets new paint next month.

THIS CAR CAME WITH THE M22 TRANSMISSION. I HIGHLY DOUBT 100 442'S WERE MADE WITH THIS TRANS IN 1971.
I know he's just trying to say it is unusual, which it is, but there were 386 442s in '71 that got the M22.

The separate trim ring was '70 only. '71 was (as mentioned above) was full chrome and the only year they were 14" x 7". Gone '72 on.
FWIW, the ones on this '71 look like repops to me.

Speaking of details, some interesting noteables: I was wondering if the black one was an earlier build as it has a combination of tower and double wire hose clamps. Also like my Aug 31/70 build of my 442 it came through without the chrome backing plates for the door armrests. 442s were suppose to have them like Supremes, otherwise the same as "S" models. As it appears to have the flat non ridged fenders that is probably the case. The blue one has the chrome backing plates.
Another difference is the PCV system. The black one has the PCV on the drivers valve cover like both of my 71 455s. On the blue one it has the air cleaner vent on the drivers side and maybe also on the passenger side. This seems like a W30, and maybe due to it being a 4 speed car. I'll look in my assembly manual later to see if that's why it's different.

The report does not have combinations of options, so it does not tell us how many were W30s. But there were only 271 4-spd w30s total. So I wouldn't be so sure that most of them were W30s.
Nope. We're not doing very good with Super Stock wheels in this thread.

The wheel may look good but the tire is dangerous. You don't drive on that tire do you? That thing's cracked all the way around the side wall. I know they haven't made STs in years.

Let's not forget that while the 14" all-chrome SSI (series 2) wheels WERE now available in '71, the series 1 style SSI wheel (with trim ring) was also still being used that year and continued through 1972.

SS1's
Here is what appears to be an original set of all chrome SS1's on ebay....http://www.ebay.com/itm/111202987398...84.m1555.l2649

Ive wondered before when someone ordered their car and specified SS1 wheels did they have any idea which version they would have received? Both wheels were option PO5. Was it the luck of the draw or was it during a specific calendar period Olds used the chrome version? My guess as the chrome was a new design it may have started out that way and they reverted back to the trim ring style later on and then continued into the 72 model year. It would be interesting to note the build dates of the cars with the chrome versions.

Info I received from another source....
UAW strike (fall of '70) caused a shortage of many parts. One part affected was the Oldsmobile SSI 14x7.0" wheel w/trim ring. The solution was to take inventory off-the-shelf at Motor Wheel Corp.: 14x7.0" 4-3/4" bolt circle "Magnum 500s" intended for the aftermarket & supply Oldsmobile with these wheels.

Makes sense, thanks. That strike seemed to affect alot during that period including giving us another year of our favorite A bodies. Those wheels on Ebay are a rare find and look very good. Cheers.
