Smoke coming from Valve Cover Breather 1971 Cutlass

OK... Now on to my next problem. I now have smoke coming from my passenger side valve cover breather and Im not sure why. It has never happened before, however I do have some out of the ordinary circumstances at the moment. I currently have my drivers side exhaust removed from the manifold becase I broke a bolt... Could this cause the smoke problem on the other side? I also just installed an HEI and today was my first day getting it cranked and timed... By the way it seems to really be noticable when I accelerate. Any suggestions? I sure hope this is not bad news... I cant afford any more of that

Smoke coming from the breather usually means you are getting excessive pressure in the crank case causing the extra pressure to find the easiest way out (breather) and thus you see the smoke.
The pressure is USUALLY caused by bad rings giving you blow by into the crank case.

I personally can't see why having one of the pipes off would cause you to blow smoke from the breather.

Are there things that can cause this to happen temporarily like having to much fuel in the intake for a day or two. The first day I put on the HEI I could not get it cranked, but I tried it several times thus dumping alot of fuel into the engine. I guess I want to know if there is anything that could cause this to happen temporarily and then go away?...

You would blow the extra smoke out the tail pipe, not the valve cover and it wouldn't last long.

If the smoke does not go away pull your plugs and check them for for any excess oil. If you are unable to determine this by looking at the plugs I would perform compression test. I had this happen on my 65 and it ended up being a broken ring.

Is it a lot of smoke and is it being forced out?
Any pinging, knocking or backfiring when you were setting the timing after the HEI install?
It should have a closed positive crankcase ventilation system with the breather tube going into the air cleaner?
You do have a good PCV valve and hose and all that on the left valve cover?
If all that is good I would get that manifold fixed then button everything up and see what happens.
If it continues go with the previous suggestions and start the process of elimination.

I just turn up the radio if it makes noise and if it smokes I don't look at it.

No pinging or knocking or backfiring and all I have on that valve cover is the little circular breather that plugs into it. The PCV valve is connected to the valve cover that is on the drivers side.
