1965 Cutlass radiator fan

1965 Cutlass radiator fan
I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. I know the cooling systems for 64, 65 are a little different. I am putting a new aluminum radiator in because of cooling issues. While I have it out I was wondering of I could put in a 6 bladed fan in place of the stock 4 blade for more flow. Can I use a 6 bladed fan for a newer car? Do I need to change to a clutch setup or can I keep it solid mounted? I am seeing a lot of universal fans from summit and speedway, any opinions on those?
Sorry for the long post I hope my questions are easy to answer even though there a a few of them, thanks in advance.

I'll let the other's chime in with more up to date solutions, but first thing why are you having cooling issues? And there is a BIG difference between the 64-65's. The 65 radiators are 3.5 inches taller-thus the core support is also different. You could have a simple problem, vs dropping some $$$$ on new parts. Tell us whats going on...

The previous owner replaced the stock 4 core radiator with a 2 core. On a hot day or idling the temp would get over 210. I called my local radiator guy and he recommended using a 2 1" core aluminum instead. On a warm day on the highway it would still creep up. The new rad should help with the cooling at warm days and thought the new fan should help with city driving and idling. FYI a don't have a shroud but really don't want to drop $250 for a reproduction shroud

The local rad guy also said in 66 olds went to cross flow so I don't know if the shroud and fans were different. Thanks for letting me know that the rads were different heights for 64 and 65. I knew the inlet and outlets were on the opposite sides.

You mentioned that you would use a clutched fan, is there any reason in particular that you like the clutched fan or have you just had good luck with them?
Thanks for the reply

All 1964-90 Olds water pumps have the same bolt pattern to the block and on the fan hub flange. I assume you are aware of the three different lengths of Olds water pumps and the fact that just about every catalog and vendor lists Olds water pump applications incorrectly. I use mechanical clutch fans because they are more reliable than electric and move more air.

I appreciate your input, I am new to Oldsmobiles and don't want to mess the car up.

OK, thanks. I did not know about the 3 lengths of water pumps, but it makes sense. I was definitely going to keep the mechanical fan, just didn't know if solid mounted or clutch was better. For the different lengths of water pump, were the fans different to maintain the distance to the radiator or was that accounted for with different lengths of spacer/clutch?

The clutch heights can vary. For fixed fans the spacer between the pulley and fan was changed. The 1965 cars used the 5.1" water pump for both A/C and non-A/C applications. Airtex 773 is the pump I used on my 67 Delta (also a 5.1" pump for A/C applications). Hayden 2797 is the severe duty clutch. Use a 7 blade 19" fan. Here's an interesting article about tweaking the clutch settings.

I believe this is the clutch fan for the '65 AC application.
I could get measurements for you.
Have one with steel blades, but I also have one with aluminum blades...not sure of that year but looks very similar.

That would be great. Could I get the fan diameter on those and the distance between the fan mounting surface and water pump mounting surface? Any other measurements you provide would be greatly appreciated

When installing the new radiator fabricate seals and dams so that all of the air goes through the radiator vs. around the sides. Clean the cooling system with CRC ThermoCure, replace the thermostat, test the radiator cap even if it is new and don't exceed 50% coolant to water ratio.

My 1st car while in the service was a 65 Cutlass. If you are using the correct water pump, you can use just about any fan clutch and fan from just about any 442. I ended up running a fan clutch and fan from a 71 442. Rock solid temperature at 180° after installation. Sure wish I had that car today.
