Oil filter bypass

I have a question, if the oil pressure is high will it cause the oil filter bypass to be in bypass? Reason I ask is upon oil change I see metallic particles that are suspended in the oil. But upon cutting filter open nothing trapped by the filter media. Engine is a ‘65 400. Oil pressure is @ 40-50 psi at 1200 rpm.

Check to see if there is a bypass in the engine or in the filter that is not closing properly. Also check to see that the media in the filter is properly attached so oil cannot pass through the filter without passing through the media. Which filter were you using?

AC PF30,I believe the bypass is built into the filter adapter and I am not sure how you could test it.

The bypass opens when the pressure drop in the filter is high. Oil pressure registered on a gauge does not cause bypass.

This does not mean the bypass is operating properly. The bypass may still be opening too soon. A check would be to change the oil filter adapter and see if the problem is corrected.

Push on it gently and see if it feels like the spring is O.K. and closing it properly.

Agreed, I will try replacing unit as for pushing on spring I don't believe this is designed to be a serviceable unit.

The suggestion to check the spring is a good one too.

You'll see a disk, about 3/8" diameter on the oil filter face of the adapter.

Here's what you would do:
  1. Press gently on the disk to see if the spring behind it seems to have remaining tension
  2. Look to see that the disk seats properly

Lots of good suggestions here but nobody has addressed the real problem.

There really should not be any metallic particles in the oil to begin with. You should consider taking an oil sample next oil change (or sooner) and sending it to get analyzed. Most parts stores sell the kits to do this and its not very expensive. Might let you figure out what is about to fail.

Yes, Thanks for the suggestion, I am planning on getting it checked out, Looks to be brass colored and not magnetic....Got to assume bearing material??

More than likely copper from bearings. I would keep a good eye on it and stop running it if it gets any worse so you dont do too much damage.
