Proper Trim For a 1972 SSIII Spare Tire

What is the correct "loading" for a 72 SSIII spare tire? I know how it's supposed to be stowed, but should the spare have a center cap, the 5 bezels and a trim ring, or some some combination of these items? Also, should the spare have that tire info sticker (it's a repro Wide Oval) on the tread?

Yep.... I'd like to know also! Teepo's spare doesn't have the bezels or a center cap or a beauty ring, lol. It's just the tire on the painted rim. And no sticker on the tread either, but then again it's been used and is not a new tire. That's how it was when I got her.

I used an extra center cap also, and will use a trim ring too, when I go in my attic and get an extra one. I bought 5 BFG's and do a 5 tire rotation so I use my spare. Mine is a driver, but like Tony said, it's a lot easier if you have to change it on the side of the road. I have 225 70 R 14 and the spare is a real tight fit.

Not meaning to intrude on a thread,
But..... Anyone have a picture of how the spare tire mounts into trunk-the sticker on the trunk is faded - I can fix a stuck push rod but cannot figure out this spare tire thing

Not a very good pic, I see. Looking at that diagram posted by 1970CS, Teepo's trunk doesn't have those 'holders' for her jack handle. Her handle slides into the rubber sleeve that goes over the jack, which is under the spare. And that's how her diagram shows it goes.

Sammy do you have an assembly manual? It's got a pretty good diagram of how everything is stowed. There's two different pages in two different parts depending on if you have the plain steel wheels or if you have the SS1/II/III's (it in the "options" section)

Anyone else on the dress? It looks like in the assy manual that, for at least a SSI, it should have a center cap without the main trim ring, but of course this does nothing for the SSII/III

All SSII and SSIII spare wheels with bolt-on center caps were equiped with center caps and the 5 bezels. No trim ring.

Parts book calls for 5 center caps for the SSI wheel.

Just thought i would post the two different spare tire mounts that you helped me with.
The pics on left are with the steel factory rim-notice the right angle that the end of jack butts against, and it is crucial that the jack assembly is mounted towards front of trunk, on the other side of the threaded hold-down.
the pics on the right are of the special rim assembly which i did not have.So used a L bracket for a fencepost gate!-available at any hardware store!Worked well and could keep centre cap on the sparetire

Thanks again for your help!

Hey Joe,

Hope all's well on your spare tire adventure.

I just bead blasted the heck out of it and painted mine last night, She could use a second coat, but that'll come in 2-3 days. Here's what she looks like.
