Speedo Needle is jumping
Hi, I got a problem with my speedo.
If I drive very slow, everything is ok. But if I drive around 20Mph the needle from my speedo starts jumping up and down...
The speedo cable is new, the speedo is ok too.
What else could it be?
(Its a 52 Super 88)
Thanks and Regards,
Kai

You can try pulling the cable and lubing it with a light oil. Most people are going to tell you it's the cable. I bought a brand new one and it did the same thing. I lubed it and it worked for a while but it's back to jumping and not registering speed worth a crap.

The cable is the most likely cause, but not the only one. Since pulling the cable out of the sheath and lubing it is free, that's where I'd start. If that doesn't fix it, look to damaged speedo gears in the trans or a bad speedo head.

My guess is lubrication will fix it. The speedometer on my '73 wagon jumps around if the car has been sitting out in cold (below freezing) weather overnight. Once the car has been driven a few miles, the problem gradually diminishes and then finally goes away. I assume it's because the lubricant gets moved softened and starts doing its job by the friction of the cable turning inside the sheath.
Not that I have that many occasions to park the car in subfreezing weather.
