1964 Cutlass pro touring build

Picked up this 64 coupe on Sunday! Gonna be a longggg term project. I told my fiance 5 years but we'll see! Gonna be a ground up build. Car is pretty solid - needs a trunk pan and I found some rust behind a front fender. Blew off the front end yesterday, no big surprises. Just lots of missing bolts, etc. Plan is coilovers and tubular suspension on all 4 corners, big inch stroker LS with a 6 speed, interior will be mostly original with some comfy buckets. If anyone needs 64 parts, let me know! A lot of stuff isn't going back on.

Looks great. Im sure i need parts but have no clue what yet. Ill be posting some more pics soon on my build thread, Im just going with a mild ls and muncie. But i did step up to a UMI suspension, and boxed the frame in. So far it is going together well

I Have UMI LS swap mounts in my 71 and like their customer service - so this will most likely get the UMI treatment as well. Going to be a 408ish ci LS with a t56 hopefully.

I like it! It looks to be the same color combo as mine. It’s good to see a few 64 builds going on.

Its not staying red. Red is probably my least favorite color on a car(no offense). I'm a big fan of dark grays, I have been looking at Cyber gray from the C6 Z06. Hopefully I get some more time to work on the car this afternoon, I'd like to have all the stock suspension off the car.

Dont make the same mistake i just did. UMI (and others) say that on the bushings in the 64 axle housing you need to save the outer bushing shell to reuse for the poly bushing. I beat mine out with a hammer and of course the shells are now unusable

mines not staying red either... 40 ish year old me owes 16 year old me his dream car

The stock axle will not be staying in the car. The 64 will eventually get a stroked LS, so I will most likely build a 12 bolt or 9" to support it.

Buick used a really nice graphite gray metallic on the Lacrosse's at the end of their production run. I hunted all over to find one, but couldn't. You should check that color out.

Has anyone here seen a Juneau Gray Irid. in person? The few photos I have seen online look great, and it seems like an unusual color.

I too am a fan of the greys on the 64. Mine will need a repaint in the future some time as it’s chipping in areas. Would like to go same color I have now or maybe a little darker. It’s a bluish grey color. I need to re do the rear quarters one day if I can ever find any. The bottom of the quarters were filled with mud at some point. Which is weird every where else they used metal.

Beautiful 64! This will be a bit lower than that.

Pulled the front control arms off last night. Both nuts at the tops of the shocks rounded off, even after soaking in PB for days. Ended up lopping them off with the cutting wheel. Front end is almost torn down, then time to move to the rear and pull the axle and stock control arms.

Progress has been slow as my wife and I had a baby girl in March. I work on it here and there when time/funds allow. I ended up getting a new frame for it as this one had been pulled before and I wanted to start with a completely straight frame. Ended up getting a frame from under a 65 GTO that was replaced with an Art Morrison chassis. Frame got glass blasted then it then went to a good friend of mine to have a few body mounts repaired and also the HPI customs bracing kit installed.

I also built a dolly from 4x4's with casters to put the body of the car on. I have a two car garage but the other bay is occupied by my 71 cutlass so I pushed the 64 body as close against the wall as I could and I have been building the frame between the two cars. Its tight, but its managable.

Last week I finally got the chance to start mocking up some suspension. Full UMI with Viking coilovers and Speedway Tall 2" drop spindles. I have full proforged steering as well but I accidentally threw away my steering arms with the old spindles so I gotta order another pair. I want to mock up everything including brakes, gas lines, etc before I send the frame out to be powdercoated - I'd hate to have to drill through fresh powder coat for a bracket or something of the sort.

It's looking really good. Nice welds for sure. I'll be really interested to see how the drop spindles work out. I could not get the trans mount to work with the external linkage on my Muncie, but I Bet you'll have better luck with the T56

After talking to SST, i think i going to use a TKX instead. Not cutting the trans tunnel is a really big thing for me and of course there is a small price difference with the TKX being cheaper.

I’m excited to hear that and see how it works out for you I’ve got just a regular tko in my truck but only have about 1 mile on it so far. I wanted to go tkx but just wasn’t ready to commit. It would open up a lot of clutch choices when paired to my ls block. The 10 spline in my Muncie limits options somewhat.

do you have a center console that you are planning to use?

The picture doesnt do these things justice. These are the 12" rotor with 6 piston dynapros from Wilwood. By far the most I've ever spent on a set of brakes. Still need to do some measurements to make sure they are square to the rotor.

Small update. Finished mocking the front suspension. Steering arms required a bit of modification as they were hitting the control arm stops before any real type of turning radius was achieved. Tore it all down and tossed it on the garage. Picked up a Quick Performance 9, all UMI rear suspension and viking coilovers. Waiting on custom coilover brackets from VFI for them to work with the rear.

Thanks! Me too. Its a nissan color that came on the infamous R34 Skylines called Millennium jade.

So there is an issue with viking coilovers and the bracketry on Quick performance rears. The guy I ordered my rear suspension from makes his own brackets, and they finally came in. Gonna take them to powdercoat this weekend if I find some spare time.

Very cool project! That’s gonna rock! Nice work so far

Checkout Shadow Grey from a 1969 Acadian, that’s what I used on my Skylark and it’s amazing.

Been awhile since I updated this. The frame is completely done. Just need some wheels to roll it on. Body work going to start soon. I cut out all the bad sheet metal which didnt leave much - basically a shell. Ordered a bunch of metal today but a lot of what I need is out of stock through AMD. Had it blasted this week too.
