Well it’s been a while since an update.
Took a little time off of this to do some maintenance and enjoy the 70…but now with the frame finished I’m onto the body.

Bought a great body cart from Redline and got it ready for stripping.
Heres where inexperience has cost me a little.
I always planned to do the frame, body, and underside down to bare metal, but doing the underside before stripping the top side was kinda dumb. I should have had the entire car stripped and started from there. Luckily I didn’t ruin the underside, but there was a bunch of clean up.

Smart work

You stayed away from the roof seam, smart move.
I am very impressed with the condition of this body.

Yep. I wanted to sneak up on it with a DA and save myself a possible headache.
you can also see evidence of a slide hammer pulling out the metal all the way down the right side.
very little rust, but evidence of some trauma at some point.

Where to start…
I got a lot done considering I was fight flash rust AND the fact that I don’t know how to use a spray gun.
lotsa prep and reprep and fast etch and more prep…
But I finally got 2 coats of epoxy on the car. I didn’t keep a very good wet edge on the paint so it’s a little streaky. That ANF a bad regulator made the first coat go one like ****. (Buy the quality **** people).

This weekend I decided to attack the fenders.
The fenders looked ok but the braces needed some work.

Ive been trying to sell a set of 64 fenders for ages($200???) to not avail.
Well I’m glad I didn’t sell them because one of them gave their life so I could steal the brace for the 65.
(zero F’s given)
The other was just patched with some sheet metal.

Also had to fill in the antennae hole some yahoo made on the drivers side.
My car wasn’t order with a radio so the fenders were never punched.

Even test fir some chrome just to see how they fit. A little hammer and dolly and viola!
After prep I did a much better job with the spray gun. Minus some dust they’re great.

Now it’s time for filler!!!
yay.

Thanks guys...she's coming along.

All I have to do now is firewall, drop body on frame, hook up all the lines, all the glass, the body work, the electric, the dash, the paint....
Ugh.

Prepping the hood...about 5 hours of sanding, wire wheeling and blowing all the sand out of the crevices.

I had a problem when it was blasted. The blaster removed the panel bond/seam sealer which caused the hood to warp or "oil can"
But some cardboard spacers and new sealer has taken up the space and cured the problem.
Glad I could save this beautiful hood.

A big set back totally killed my drive this weekend.
After getting the bottom of the hood prepped and painted with welding the trim holes in for the club coupe spear…
I flipped it over and the damn thing was warped SOOOOOOooooooo badly.
I think this was from the media blasting.

Like so bad the frame pattern was showing through the skin with just a light pass with 120 grit.
Im still pissed I ruined such a nice hood.
LET THAT BE A LESSON TO YA.
DO NOT BLAST HOODS.
Trash.

garbage.

Nor totally garbage. Sand it all out. Might not be as bad as you think. However blasting a hood cam cause warpage.

I worry about how much filler it would take to make this hood flat again...each of the 4 windows in the frame led to low spots.
Will filler over a hot engine react at the same speed/amount as the metal when it gets warm?

I honestly have no idea.

Even a skim coat of filler over a hot engine will probably not hold up as long as some other place on the car.

Metal distortion

Look for an old metal fabricator. Kind of a dying bread, but this can be brought back. Problem is, is it worth it?

Pete the same thing happened to the car I got from Jim. I have pictures after blasting and you can plainly see the under structure of the hood and trunk lid.
can’t tell it now, but I know this could come back on me later.

Yeah...I just think that's WAY too big of an expanse of relatively unsupported metal to blast.
Lesson learned.

Technique

It’s user error. You gotta be very careful when blasting large panels. Keeping plenty of distance from the metal and not blasting straight on will keep the heat down. Blast at an angle and stay back from the metal.
it might take longer, but that’s ok.

find you a body shop with an old timer, he may be able to heat that hood and get it back.

Well after smoothing the firewall, applying the seam sealer, primer and paint I wasn’t happy with anything…
The sealer looked like crap. The panel was still a bit wavy. And the paint crackled a little.
So…it ALL came off and I’ll try again.

One weekends worth of work and I’m pretty happy I stripped it all back down.
-redid some filler work to lose some dents and dings on the firewall
-primed
-heavier/less flexible seam sealer
-painted

It a touch shinier than I’d want, but it will dull with a little age and road wear.

The body has finally met its new frame.
Very pleased that the trans with the gear vendors clears trans tunnel.
Not please about the height of my new Eaton springs.
