Gen 1 Rx7 SBC swap.

This is my youngest sons first car. He’s 21 ,, I’ve been helping over the last year to get this swap up and running.

its a real solid one owner car that he sold the complete drive train out of it and has been picking up used parts to get it together. It’s a real low dollar build . Doesn’t have much money into it but a ton of hours..it’s been just over a year now …started it up today.

it’s a $150.00 350 chev from an early 70’s cop car. We didn’t realize until we stripped it down that it had later 305 small valve heads on it..so we kept them and installed the “big” 1.84” 4 barrel valves to keep the compression up using steel shims.

mild pocket port to fit the valves
218/218 @ .050 .480” with 1.6 used stamped steel rockers.

the block got a hone and some new rings. Intake is an antique Edelbrock single plane streetmaster. Crank got a polish and new bearings..stock rods and cast pistons are original…their loose 😎

edlebrock 750 AVS 😎, pertronix dizzy and coil with limiter and MSD wires. Trans is a 5 speed world class form a mid 80’s mustang, rear is an 8.8” ford from a ranger with 4:10’s that we narrowed.

CVR electric pump, aluminum rad, electric fan , HV Holley mechanical pump.

Edelbrock Street Master, it has been 30 years since I saw one. It was put on a stock rebuilt 71 sbc 350 from a big car with a 750 Holley, put in a 77 Chebby 1/2 ton, not a good combo. That is the bonus of the LS craze, anyone who wants a sbc can get them nearly free. More pics please.

Rear end is in and driveshaft made. 8.8 Ford we narrowed here. Welded on all the old stock Mazda mounts with energy suspension poly bushings and a perfect launch girdle. 4:10’s is too much for the motor,, but that’s what it’s fit for now

change out later

I'm normally not interested in off brand builds but this is fun. Keep the updates coming.

all wrapped up. Going in for exhaust soon. no room for full length duals so we are thinking 3.5” single with one 3.5” high flow muffler. See what they can figure out.

stainless block huggers . Only one pipe had to be rerouted around steering box

Stock Mazda rear 4 link bars. Shortened the uppers and lengthened the lowers to get corrected pinion angle. Hope they hold up 😁

This is how it sits.. I think we’ll lower the rear once he gets the rear tires and rims . These are temporary

How small is that crossover to clear the drive shaft? The down pipes look nice.

2 1/2” all the way both sides to 3 1/2” single.. the shadow makes it look weird.

This is the crossover

Yeah, 2.5" isn't bad, not going to choke it. Plenty of gear and power. What does this car weigh?

Some other pics..he’s been driving it for a few days now. Gotta get some sticky tires,,it breaks the tires loose way to easy😎

front end needs to come up an inch or two…before the pan and down pipes get ripped off

Took it to the track with the Olds club. His first time ever down the track in any car..13.1@107 with a spinning 2.3 60’

should be min 12.5 with a decent 60’

Depending on the exhaust sound, can you spell S.L.E.E.P.E.R. ? That car looks stock to me.

we tried to keep it stock looking. had to cut out the hood bracing and use a big drop air filter base so we didn’t have to cut a hole in the hood.

we have some negative offset rear rims for it now so it can be lowered down to clear the wheel well lip.

single exhaust out the back… shifter and interior looks dead stock . It’s a blast to drive

You went to the wrong track, if the wight balance (50/50 is not too different from the Wankel vs the SBC it belongs on a road racing track. RX7s are great road racers and Cobra killers when HP is added and suspension isn't changed much. Very light car and a ton of fun.... Tedd

I'm really impressed with the build quality. It sure don't look very low-buck.

biggest expense so far has been the custom stainless exhaust. that wasn’t cheap. It does have a used muffler and the shorty headers were only $114.00 Canadian form eBay.

he sold the complete excellent running original engine tranny and rear end to fund most of the project
