NA 2.56 Gear 4275 Pounds, 11s?
Is it possible, NA 4275 pounds, stock GM TQ converter, 2.56 gears, BFG radial tires, 228@.050 hyd roller, 496 GM iron heads, 490 measured HP. Can this run 11s and drive like a stock car? BTW I had nothing to do with this build other than some consulting, just found it interesting.

Excellent work! 11.84 @ 119 @ 4100 pounds, 2.56 gear, stock GM turbo 350 TQ converter on street radials, 228 @ .050 hyd cam, production GM oval port heads along with the production GM block, driven over 500 miles round trip to the track, street ability must awesome! Did I miss anything?

Car runs awesome, nice combo and pass! I was ready to bring the H/O to the FAST race the previous weekend that got canceled due to rain, couldn't get last Friday off work to make it. The DA on 11/5 was stupid good for the midwest (-300 ft?), combined with a tailwind. Definitely a record timeslip kind of day!

Fantastic ! Love it
Simple big torque combo big blocks with 3 speed auto and mild cruiser gears is MY personal favorite ! I would like to do a 496 out of our std bore stroke Gen6 454 L29 in our 74 C10 LWB (3.07 gear) and a set of AFR 265 ovals one day
To compare my old 455 Poncho in my wagon @4250# w 3.08s on slicks and I was pleased with the 12.5 , did a 12.6 with a stock TH400 converter and 2.93 gear in my old 68 GTO w a 455 also but lighter than my wagon.
My buddy Tom runs a big 501 Poncho in his full weigh 78 TA and is a low 10 1/4 car but this year his trans broke and lost 1 st gear and he finished the season starting in 2nd gear and it would still do 6.8 in 1/8 which is still 10's with effective launch of a 2.73 rear axle off the line with no 1st gear (vs 1st working and the 3.73 actual)

Those sound like fun cars too! Some people these days forget what it takes to run 12s, 11s, and 10s when they see drag week cars cracking off 7s or 6s.
The part that’s really neat about my Monte is doing it on 225/70-15 Coopers, in a car which doesn’t usually merit a second look at a car show or cruise in. In fact, I find not many photo the car at the track.
The stall converter is working overtime on your buddy’s Poncho.

Besides, it’s entertaining to pop the hood and all they see is factory cast iron heads and a 25 year old Holley 3310 sitting on an Air Gap. How fast could it be? lol

I really think next year could be even more exciting as there are a couple items which can be improved on the car yet, and I’ve ordered a professionally built engine from Mark (VortecPro).
I’d really like to see 11.50s in less than ideal weather conditions, on the 225/70-15 tires, but we’ll see. The car drives so easy now, and acceleration is truly effortless. All this, and my wife could drive it shopping and hardly anyone could guess the potential.
Stay tuned for next year.

I think everything you’re looking for is in here.

Definitely a 496. A sleeper was the goal, and to be able to do it on 225/70-15 Coopers…that, and drive 80 mph on the highway for hours on end.

The Engine Build
Then in July, the 496 project I've been working on for two years finally came together:
- 496 (4.310" x 4.25")
- Built following Mark Jones (VortecPro videos - 620 hp, 467 build videos)
- Scat 4.25" cast crank
- Scat 6.385" I-beam rods
- MAHLE Power Pack 18cc pistons and rings (1.5/1.5/3.0mm), 10.1:1
- Isky 275/284 HR cam, 228°/238° @ 0.050", 0.553"/0.578" (ground on 111°, installed at 109°)
- Isky 8005A springs
- Howards 91167 lifters
- Factory 049 oval port heads (2.19"/1.88" Ferrea valves, 11/32" stems)
- Intake guide replaced, bronze liners in intake and exhaust
- Ported according to VortecPro videos, flowed on a 4.5" fixture
- Flow Bench Results 049 Casting
- Lift Good Port/Bad Port/Exhaust
- 0.200 153.1/152.0/122.2
- 0.250 192.5/191.1/142.9
- 0.300 229.3/228.6/161.1
- 0.350 260.3/260.0/177.8
- 0.400 283.7/267.7189.4
- 0.450 297.4/273.3/197.9
- 0.500 305.4/281.6/204.7
- 0.550 307.9/288.0/212.0
- 0.600 303.5/296.1/217.1
- Scorpion 1.7 Rockers
- Performer RPM Air Gap
- 950 ADP carb on dyno (box-stock Holley 3310 750 vacuum secondary on the car)
- A few issues prevented the engine from reaching its potential on the dyno.
- Intake valves were floating at 5300 rpm (look at the actual horsepower)
- Too much oil (7 qt pans only need 5.5 qts), and
- Incorrect correction factor on the dyno.

Top 5 cars Id own. I'd take a loaded or stripped 70-71 stick SS 454 in black, silver, or midnight blue no vinyl top any day.
IMO even par with any GM A body. Always liked the early 70s Monti's and GPs... long-nose short deck. These cars stand out in a sea of Vells & Camaros & GTOs. One of the reasons why I hang on to my 68 442. It's often the only one at a show/cruise.

A set of SS Cragars would set it off, when not trying to sleep.

Monte Carlo SS 454 were only available with an automatic transmission. I like the vinyl tops, but the damage they do is well-documented. The Montes aren’t bad looking, but I certainly wasn’t hunting for mine when I bought it. I like green, and sleeper, and this car screamed it. The price was right too. Nearly every MC I see is better looking but luckily, I rarely see any at the local shows 😂
‘68 Olds 442, nice! I’m an Olds guy at heart, but their engines are such a handicap 😂 Don’t get me wrong, I’m not Chevy swapping a classic Olds in any case.

Jesus that's nice. Sticks well, great reaction. Great Air too.
Bench Talk:
Wonder what it would do with 373:1 rear, a slightly looser converter, and a dual-fed TH400 with a brake. Ill bet you'd pick up a couple of tenths? See how easily I spent your money.
Have you tried a slight timing increase? 40-41°
What RPM is the 1-2 shift?
Are you letting trans shift or are you doing it?
Did you figure you and the fuel weight into the 4100lbs?
Dam consistent, 11.8 -11.9s all day at 119 it's NO slouch.

With the mph, and considering it struggles to put down any real power for the first 150', 121 mph with 3.73 and a looser converter is a fairly safe bet - and that should be good for 10.90s-11.0X with ample traction.
I have not tried more than 37° since it would spark knock in 95°F heat.
I don't have a tech in the car, but from graphing the run from Dragy data, it appears the shift occurred around 5800 rpm (72 mph). My old 467 was notably lower (see attached).
I'm shifting the transmission using my butt dyno.
4100 lbs is me rolling across the scale in the car.
Thank you!

Just Kool.
If it was mine the only thing I do is make the TH400 shift a little more nasty, manual valved dual feed style with more line PSI. Wolf in sheep's clothes. I'd surely be content with high 11s. You got to be a proud dad.

Ideally, I'd love to be able to run 11s, even in warm weather. But, the goal is 11.50s with the same drivetrain I have today.
I am fairly proud of the situation today, the car is everything I could hope for on the street.
