Conv top lift cylinder leaking

I have a 69 Cutlass and had the interior out and noticed a pool of fluid under the lift cylinder. I checked the fittings and hoses and was able to tighten it a fitting a bit but am wondering do the cylinders themselves leak? Or when they fail it is an internal issue?

thanks, I need to take a really good look to make sure it's not a hose or fitting. That's a great price.
