ID this mystery part

I found tis rubber part just laying under the hood on driver fender.

It's about 2"-3" diameter. Any idea where it goes?

Could be the insulating rubber cap for the horn relay distribution block. Would go over the terminal post where the wires connect (if that's what I'm looking at). What year/model car?

The broken opening would be to secure the cover around one or two wires to keep it from dislodging/falling off. Again, I'm not positive that is what this is but it appears so. Called the protector.

Vintage Chief, that is the general area where I found it.

It's a 1966 442.

The images I displayed are from a 1971 Cutlass Supreme. I don't know what a 1966 A-Body (4-4-2) may have looked like. I suspect it is the distribution block wiring post protector.

NOTE: I'm only guessing. They may have had something similar covering the Alternator power terminal post or even the ground terminal post? Not sure. Good Luck!

On "horn" or you mean on the horn relay distribution block wiring post?

A buddy had a 73 Cutlass that was missing that "protector". He checked the oil one day and yep, the dipstick contacted the hot stud and immediately welded itself to it! He grabbed it off and burnt his hand. Dipstick was bent and had to be replaced. That's why it is there.

You guys were correct, except the guy who guest toilet flapper.

it fit perfect, cable loop is split but it feels pretty secure on stud/nut

thanks everyone.

As I suggested in Post #4 you should secure the protector where you see the cut opening. Note in Hairy's image (above) you can see how the opening surrounds a wire on the bottom RH side. Depending on the thickness of the rubber & how long it's been laying around, you might attempt to persuade the rubber into a little bit of a bend with a heat gun - just enough to make the rubber slightly pliable (this is a suggestion). You may not even need to but it's in your best interest to secure the broken circle around a wire so it's not lost/dislodged, etc.

...secure the cover around one or two wires to keep it from dislodging/falling off.

Thanks Chief….i ended up poking a small hole it flap with wire hole and put a zip tie through the hole and around cable. So even if it pops off stud it should dangle on wire and not fly away.

LMAO because that's what I would have done. My motorcycle has a trickle charger plug-in rubber end terminal and gets beaten up on occasions over time and i did something nearly identical.

Not trying to hyjack this thread, but the connection at the green arrow could be trouble, now or in the future...

The metal terminal shouldn't be visible if the plastic connectors are fully seated, and the split in the male terminal shouldn't be visible if it's fully seated.

Thanks Toro.

I’m fixin to head into the garage here in a second to diagnose the horns not working. I’ll check that connection you pointed too and make sure I get it repaired.

not to hijack my own thread but do you have to remove front bumper to get horns out, such a weird spot to place horns.

Hey Toro, thanks so much for the heads up on connector. It was only halfway plugged in and loose.
i pushed the connector together and it’s super solid now with no brass showing. Any idea where those purple/yellow wires head off to?

Also, I tested my horns and they work great if I bypass the relay with a jumper wire. Tomorrow I’ll look at the relay or button contacts.
I’m glad I don’t have to remove those super hidden horns.
