The Ninth Generation Eighty Eight 1986 - 1991

In order to avoid hijacking this thread https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...9/#post1199027 I made a new one.

That 88 was a great car, and I only sold it after the then 16 year old ABS system required very expensive repairs (one still fairly expensive solution being to convert it to standard brakes). Actually I gave it to a local kid who worked as a mechanic who did fix it and drive it for a few more years. The 90 coupes were prettymuch identical to the 91s, but slightly more common. One issue when driving such such a rare car - I got rear ended in 2004 or so and there was some coupe-specific body part I can’t recall exactly that was very hard to find 13 years after the last rare-at-the-time coupes were built
The C and H body were closely related in these years. The C body "98" was the new body in '91 and the H body "88" was still the old body. To the casual observer the "88" is the same back to '86, but underneath the '91 "88" was essentially the new body (which came with the "88" the next year) which included the L-27 shortblock.

For '91 the ABS was completely reingineered and the old problematic electronic assist Teves system was gone. The new system was vacuum assist. One rare piece is the mounting bracket for the G87 load leveling compressor. It bolted to the JM4 ABS unit, making it a one year only piece. There were 11 '91 base Royales built with ABS and 67 Broughams. My production figures do not say how many cars were built with JM4 and G87 (which was part of the V81 towing package [3 Royals built and 11 RBs] and the FE-3 package [39 Rs and 128 RBs]). I have visited a lot of salvage yards in the last 15 years and only seen one of those brackets and it was on a sister H body, a '91 SSE Bonneville.

The one in the pic is a factory photo; I found a pair at the Homecoming one year. It is a Royale and not a Brougham. They made 1127 '90 "88" Royale coupes, 209 with the FE-3 or "Level Three Suspension".

That's definitely a rare car! I love the wheels.
