529 Olds build

I'm in the process of assembling the new engine for my '69. Hoping to have it completed and on the dyno some time in October. The process has been slow as nearly everything is custom and needs tweaking and machining for clearance here and there. The goal is 900+hp and 8.8X at 150+ mph in the 1/4 in my 3200 lb car. The combination is as follows:

Rocket Racing block
Bryant 4.350 stroke 8 cw crank with 2.100 rod journals
GRP 1300 series 7.250 long rods
CP custom 4.400 bore domed pistons 16:1
Total Seal AP .9mm/.9mm/3mm ring pack
Trend H-13 .220 wall pins
Morel Ultra Pro .937 lifters
Trend 7/16 .165 wall pushrods
Bullet .820/.800 lift 278/296 @.050 115 LSA solid roller cam with LS firing order
Wenzler/RR heads 2.200/1.71 valves (titanium intake, stainless exhaust) ported by John Marcella (flow 343 intake and 240 exhaust through the intake manifold) 3.16 min CSA
Jesel 1.75/1.75 ratio shaft rockers
Marcella custom one off intake manifold (started as a Mast Performance LS3 bolt together)
CFM (Dale Cubic) 2.200 throttle bore 4500 series carb
Moroso fabricated oil pan with kick out
Titan oil pump

I'll update with pics when I get a chance. Dyno sheets will be posted with all info just like the 461 build.

Cool. Did you have to offset the pushrods? Kind of surprised you going with a wet sump.

Yes the pushrods are offset as well as a few hours with a hand grinder.

Q16 and Sunoco Maximal 116. Dale Cubic is going to tune the carb on the dyno for both fuels and give me two different set ups.

Did you have to cut your oil pan to get that oil pump to fit.
I have the same pump .sitting in a box. Because I could or didn't want to cut my pan.
Which I ended up doing anyway. Because I couldn't turn right.

It's a custom Moroso aluminum pan designed for use with a Titan pump.

Luckily, Dale lives 20 minutes from me and is a regular at the shop I dyno at. They have him on speed dial in the dyno room. Great guy.

I ordered the pistons through Bill at BTR Performance. I poured an epoxy mold of my chambers and mailed it to him which he forwarded on to CP. Then I took measurements of valve centerlines, free drop etc. I then mapped out my cam to get actual valve lifts at points before and after TDC. Then i sent this info to Bill to plug into a program he uses to determine required valve pocket depths. He then gives that information to CP and one of their guys designs the piston using that information and the chamber mold. Then you wait....

My only complaint with the RR block is that they didn't provide any external oil ports. I use a remote oil filter and an oil accumulator which requires some sort of external oiling. The engine that was previously in the car had the oil inlet configured like the one in the "461 bracket build" thread. The RR block is cast differently and doesn't have enough material in that area to drill and tap for an oil port. My only option is to machine an adapter to mount to the oil filter housing pad that accepts -12an fittings. Of course that interferes with a header tube so now I have to cut and reroute the headers. Always something...

That car is gonna fly!! Now that's an impressive build! And top it all off with the major heavy hitters players too; BTR Bill, Dale Cubic, John Marcella

Quality Chad, Certainly nice components and thought going into the engine build, hope it runs your number and more. The LS3 intake beginning - how close are the port layouts to the RR heads ?
Thanks Glen

Ooooh, Mr. Kotter, Mr. Kotter!
I'm curious about some things. First, the displacement: I thought the RR block would go to 560. Are you going 529 for longevity and cylinder wall thickness?
Second, the Morel lifters.... you comfortable with those? I thought they were having wheel failures. Maybe the Ultras have better stuff.
Third, the LS firing order- why? Efficiency? Ease of a CNP?
4th, let's see this manifold!

Yes these can go 560, probably more. This is the same bore as the 560 combination but with less stroke. I'm not a big believer in the huge strokes and feel the heads will have a hard enough time keeping up with 529 CID.

I'm not familiar with any recent failure issues with Morel rollers. These are the higher end series with larger axles, wheels and bearings.

The LS firing order is supposedly easier on the rotating assembly. Regardless, I needed a custom billet cam core for the specs I wanted so I could pick whatever firing order I wanted. I have no interest in CNP.

Interesting. I get what you're saying about the long strokes; didn't know the bores were the same. Keep in mind, I know just enough to be dangerous; I'm trying to learn some things. Can't wait hear this monster!

That been on my mind. Love to see that! And what was done to fit the RR head. If you can. Thanks Chad

It won't make 1000hp. Hoping for at least 900hp.
