Edelbrock Small block power numbers

The anticipation is over, kind of.
Attached is the Dyno sheet from my 357 mule with the new small block Edelbrock head.
To recap, the combo is;
Mahle 4.100 10cc piston, 9.2:1 compression
Mahle MLS head gaskets
Molnar 6.00” Olds rods
Crane 222/228@.050 Hyd roller, lift is .555 on both, 110lsa
This run was done with a stock Victor and 750 VS Brawler carb
My 1.6 rockers were used as well as .145 wall 3/8” pushrods.
All pulls done on 91 pump gas and at 500/sec.

Heads were totally and completely stock, untouched other than to check chamber volume.
As is typical with my Dyno sessions as well, engine was run with 3’ of 2.5” pipe and Magnaflow mufflers.
Needless to say, with more compression and cam, I think 480+ isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Not bad for a pump gas, off the shelf SBO build. Btw it made 424hp with an RPM intake, same carb.
Let the bickering and nit picking begin.

Yep, internally balanced with an SFI balancer.

Why so short on cam duration? I would think it to be more in the 236/242 range

Simple, this was my test mule patterned after a majority of the builds on here. When I put it together I wasn’t sure of the status of the new heads.
To take it one step further for all the Engine Masters fans on here. Their 383 SBC Chevy test mule has 10.2:1 compression, a Victor intake, AFR heads and a 242/248 Comp roller. It makes 480/445 with just a short 3.00” pipe and no mufflers. I think my combo is pretty damn impressive, considering.

What was the peak torque and rpm, with the RPM intake? Good numbers from something that would run on regular gas. I can hardly wait to buy a set of these new heads!

I've dynoed two times on "dynamite", there is a setup page, I found this dyno to read 30 HP high due to the dyno software taking the corrected barometer converting it to the uncorrected barometer and being full point low, then theres the foot under the front of the oil pan. Hopefully you have the barometer entered correct so your data is accurate.

Nice numbers for a low compression, stock stroke 350. I'd say those heads have potential.

I would expect a response like this from someone like you.
And for all, Superflow dynos, like Velcros, have a setup page too.

Are you going to run a test with a stock type small block intake?

Probably not with these heads. I do plan on doing an intake shootout with just a decent set of iron heads. I’ll be trying to do what’s most popular.

Awesome test! Thanks for sharing. Would you mind posting the RPM manifold data? I'd love to see how the curves compare.

Thank you!
And there is so much more potential in these it’s not even funny.
Anoldsman- I’ll try to find the RPM Dyno sheet as well. I can tell you this, the RPM and Victor made about the same tq, but at vastly different rpms. The Victor made it at 5000 as shown, iirc the RPM made it at 4200 or so.
But this combo wasn’t really correct for the Victor, they just wanted a max number. If you added a full ratio compression and a bigger cam but on a tighter lsa, I’m confident the numbers would be even more impressive.

What kind of gear and converter would this need in something like a 3,600 lb A body?

I’m not a drag racer, never professed to be. I’d rely on friends with experience that are, ie Dr Dan and others.

Pretty sure 99% of us would pick the RPM intake for the street. Run a converter and gear like Copper has been running with the Victor. I assume the Victor was to satisfy Edelbrock? With the identical bottom end, except an internally balanced 330 crank, a roller cam on a 112 LSA with 4 less intake and 10 degrees less exhaust duration and .009" less lift, intake and exhaust. My plan is my current 2350 rpm flash stall, rated at 2200 to 2500 in the 2004R and the 3.08 gears, I got from you. It is meant to drive comfortly for a 1000 miles, getting good mileage at our nearly $2 a liter gas. I plan to take it to the track next year, along with SEFI. Hopefully Edelbrock has a good amount made for the first run this Fall.

Don’t know and don’t care cuz I wouldn’t run this combo on the street myself. I’d either change it over to the rpm or add a full ratio compression and a little more cam to the Victor combination.

Since Dan's name has been brought up, it sure would be nice to see how Dan utilized Bill Travotos HP, its been years now, at least I'm very interested.

Great results, @cutlassefi! Thanks for sharing.

I think that this setup would be great with your stroker crank and your multiport EFI on an Edelbrock RPM with timing control.

I would love to see those numbers, too. I am guessing a great balance of street performance and drivability.

Then why didn’t you up the comp and add more cam?

you can run a lot more than 9.2 with 91.

I’m aware what comp ratio I can run on 91. Send me a cam, I’ll put it in.

512hp, 535tq. Flexfuel build, brother to the EFI’d 403 I posted a couple weeks ago.

Nice build Mark. A testament to your work on those heads.
this is a relatively modest build making very decent #’s!
congrats!

That is brilliant! That is a stout engine without anything radical or exotic, and I would guess that it has great manners and drivability.

Yes, it should drive real well. Went for a compromise, not all out power. But the AEM ECU helps too.

I wouldn’t be happy with 360@3400 either so we’re both in agreement there.

It’s peak HP is at 6k and peak TQ at 5k. Both seem high for that .050 duration.

What’s the adv duration and lift it’s measured at?

what’s the int c/l ?

276/282, lift is .555/.560, 107icl. Cam was installed based on the original iron headed combo.
Victor has a large plenum. Plus remember, these “Small Block” heads still have “big block” size ports(198cc). Just too much intake area for 357 ci with 9.0:1 compression. BUT it was better with the RPM, I’ll try to find the Dyno sheet.

So it's NOT a true small block head, it is REALLY a big block head with smaller chambers.

Pretty much. I tried to get them to reduce the size of the intake runner and the exhaust valve, but the casting pattern was already done.
But remember, this is a “performance” cyl head, and this is a very mild build by all accounts. However it still worked pretty well with the RPM intake right out of the box.

FYI. From what I have seen there are a fair amount of people who think this is a direct bolt on and can use any SBO intake.

Will Edelbrock offer a direct bolt on intake that the customer will not have to modify?
