Oldsmobile Race Cars

Yeah I ran into Sammy on the classracer site and he friended me on facebook. I saw those current pictures of the red Remlinger car. He said the red 72 convertible was not the same car as the blue 71 Remlinger convertible which I thought was. Wonder what happened to the blue 71 Remlinger convertible? I think Sammy said the Red 72 convertible has 143 miles on it. He also has a black 71 hardtop 442 with 7 miles?!!! I think the black 442 was a former Fornoff car according to Sammy. Chuck Garey(son of Ron Garey) posted that proof picture of the white 72 Remlinger Supreme which I had never seen on a thead on the classracer site. Thanks for the info and trivia on the white car. Was this the last car Ron Garey raced?
Not the same car.

Maybe I have the mileage of the red Remlinger convertible confused with this former Dodson Lattimore car of only 143 miles. Cutlass SX convertible from post # 537 a few post up.
Found this information about this SX per Mr. Lattimore:
According to Dale Smith the only one Raced with a 4 speed. Held the IHRA SS/K record 73-74 and NHRA SS/K record in 74 and raced locally in the Md. Va. area mostly. In 1974 it was raced 45 times locally and won 36 eliminators 8 runner ups and 1 3rd. place. It was originally raced by Stuart Mathews and Jack Bender in 71-72 with limited sucess as an automatic. It was then purchased by Lattimore's race partner Bob Dodson in Sept. 72 they redid motor trans and rear and raced it with a stick. It is currently owned by Tom Cable in MD. and is currently being restored to original. It still smells new and shows 143 miles on the odometer.

Additional information found on this car:
Former Jerry Dover car. Above succeeding owner--- The late Bill Hudson (see door glass) racing the car at Beech Bend. Photo is cropped from the auction flyer. Car was auctioned off in Kentucky a few years back. This 442 clone was actually a W-31 that was converted to a 442 with 455 engine, grilles, and emblems, which explains why it does not have a 442 VIN or cutout rear bumper but has red inner fender wells. Car came from Louisiana Fornof Olds dealer. So anybody keeping a registry of surviving 70 w-31s keep this car in mind.

Years ago....late 80's? Sammy put me in touch with a Convert. K/SA car for sale. Blue with no letters, but simliar graphics to Remlinger blue car. It was being sold by a judge in Houma named Guidry ( may be wrong on spelling ) . Car was complete, motor by Weibel...nice car. I wasn't able to buy it at the time.

Just a trim package around that time. SX was also resurrected in the late 80s and/or early 90s on the front wheel drive Cutlass Supreme. Big red "sx" on the back bumpers. Nothing special about the engines in either though.

I was at a flea market at Farmington Dragway in nc a few weeks back and a man had a Omega with SX on the 1/4 for sale that he had bought new. It had buckets, console, and a Olds 350......Said the paint (which was faded) was original.....I guess it was an Omega SX
About the car Tommy Cable is supposed to have, if he has it I can find out the mileage.
I think in later years myself and Larue Johnson were the only ones in the Baltimore/Washington area racing 60s era Olds.....He and I were in the final at one of the last races they had at 75&80 drag strip.

No I do not---never was one for taking many pics at the race track and when I did I was racing a 65 GTO and later a 67 Firebird.......then after we had everything up to Top Sportsman I went back to my roots and started racing Oldsmobiles once more. But I was around up there when Frank Trimble senior was racing in the 60s.......His son is on many of these Olds sites and does some good Olds machine work in Laurel MD. I do have pics of James Lockharts 70 442 that he has raced in NC since it was new. Not many around any more.

8 Second '74 442 I usually don't care for the Colonnade body style but this one and Kens '76 (?) are kind of growing on me.

NEWSFLASH ON THIS MYSTERY 72 FULL SIZE OLDS. This Olds was raced by Dan Lattimore. Below is a quote from him:
"Cruiser, 1972 Olds Delta 88 2r. Royale 455 C.I. SS/RA 4700 plus lbs., tubbed , Dana 60 with 5.57 and Firestone 14/32 on Cragar super tricks. 1975 NHRA record holder 1/4 and 1/8. We built this car in late 74 and raced it in 75. This was the first year of two that we raced off the index with the first car to the stripe the winner without any breakout. There is a long story about this car involving Dale Smith, Oldsmobile and fellow racers. Some of it interesting some unpleasant but all fact. I don't want to go into the unpleasant part at this time but will be happy to share the rest with you. I'll see if I can dig up some photos. This car was dismantled and crushed in 1977."

Hey GA:
The pic in your Thumbnail in post 571 is Mark " Smitty " Smith. Owns M&J Proformance in Ohio. That car is running low 10's now with C Heads and at one time still a Q-jet.
Smitty is a great guy..knows his Olds and will share info and answer questions. He built the 468 in the car in my Sig Line picture.
Just fyi

All pictures in this post are the same car in chronological order from oldest to newest:
Top two photos show incorrect Cutlass S grilles in a 71 Supreme which I've found to be common
in these 71 Supreme/ Convertible race cars. I guess they were weight savings over the correct
71 metal Supreme grilles. I would not think the metal grilles would interfere with the ram air hood
since some 71 SXs came with ram air hoods.
Note in the last photo the 72 taillights while retaining the 71 Supreme bodyside molding.
The car survived and is today in North Carolina.

This is a photo of my 78 Cutlass Salon at Portland in 2009. There was some pretty good air and I wasn`t ready for this. Hurt the old girl a little. If you click the photo it`s bigger; sorry.
