69 350 connecting rod spit holes

I received remanufactured connecting rods, but they do not have the spit holes. Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the spit holes are and is it ok to use these rods without the spit holes. Thank You

If memory serves me correctly, they were installed facing the center and provided additional oil coverage on/for the camshaft. I seem to remember them going away sometime near the end of the sixties. I have a set from a complete '67 - 330 and those rods have the spit holes but all my other SBO rods do not.

Yeah I can't see where they would be absolutely necessary. I believe you are correct that they went away from those but I think it was in the later 70's unless the 77 350 I have has older connecting rods but I doubt it. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge because I wasn't sure what they were designed for.

Spit holes

Correct on the additional oil but process dropped around 73 when they started undercutting crankshaft cheeks. Lots of 350s had 4 facing in and 4 facing out. Didn't matter ---no hole in the bearing anyway.

The factory bearings actually had a notch in them to allow oil out the spit hole. I don't know if aftermarket bearings ever had the notch. The spit hole was a neat idea but was not needed.

Smitty-----You're right about the factory bearings and I suspect they used them till they ran out but with no hole in the later model rod it didn't matter anyway and they could use them till depleted. Probably had a couple hundred of them apart in the 70's 80's but my old brain can't remember all the changes. Seems to me Federal Mogul kept the hole for years. No matter, hole or no hole old habits are hard to break always put em together with tangs facing in anyway. -------------- Come on down and test with us at MIR sometime----Danny :-)

I'll bring a set of fully ported ProComps to bolt on and see what mid 9s are like.

Good luck with being able to run on Monday. If nothing else it'll be cool.
