Is this normal?
I've pulled my engine, as many of you know, i'ts on the stand and I'm disassembling. Heads, intake, timing set, etc. are still on the motor. Really the only things I've gotten off so far are the exhaust manifolds.
I turned the motor upside-down to remove the oil pan, got it off and was turning the crank when some oil came out the intake manifold, a vacuum fitting I think. And the #8 exhaust port is full of oil. Should I be concerned?
I'm planning on taking the heads in to get them cleaned up with new seals, etc.
Thanks guys.

This is the amount of oil that poured out when the crank was turned about three full turns...

Here you can see oil drips on a couple different fittings. And I had forgotten, I plugged the distributor hole when I was cleaning the block.

I hope this helps.

For it to get there through the rings would mean it was still in the pan when you flipped the engine ... There would have been some oil left between the oil pump and the filter housing ... but not that much.

I'm not going to worry about it. The wet test came back fine. There might have been some oil in the pan but I drained it for a day and took the filter off before pulling the engine. I turned the engine over on the stand before pulling the heads to ease the cleaning. I'm wondering if I'll get it back up with the heads still on. :-/

Even with the drain plug removed and oil drained there will be some oil left on the bottom of oil pan that will not drain out,the oil probably leaked past the piston as others have stated.

I didn't flip one, my buddy did, A ford Ranger. It rolled over gently in a drainage ditch. I just pulled the spark plugs cranked it with the starter and blew all the oil out of the cylinders. Topped off the crankcase, cleaned the plugs, and fired it up.

I suppose 8 teaspoons adds up a little (one per cylinder). Again, if what Oldcutlass says about oil sliding past the rings when upside down is true, then I'm not going to worry about it.

Some of it might be from the rings & some just might be whats left in the intake from the pcv valve, I've pulled a lot of intakes on different engines & seen oil puddling. Some how it just doesn't get sucked into the combustion chamber.

there is a lot of oil left in the motor after draining the pan, lifters, passages, crank, etc, it'll drip for ever. the oil in the intake port probably went by the rings into the combustion chamber, by an open valve into the runner, your fine.
