Questions about knock sensors?

I am going to be running one with the Terminator X on my rebuilt Olds 358. Is it best to run one from a 88 to 90 Olds 307 or something else, like say a mid 80's to 90's sbc? I know the TBI sensor threads right into the water drain like 307 model, LS have different threads. They have many years and motors for each sensor. Is the sensor to work with the spark controller or the make of motor? The good sensors are all similar in price $30 to $60 each. The $25 and under seem to be junk.

I would use whichever one Holley recommends. It does not matter what type of engine. It does need to be compatible with the Holley ECM.

Good point, thanks.

It looks like 1 wire resonant and 2 wire non resonant are both compatible. It looks like the 307 sensor will be compatible, its frequency range will need set. It might be the best starting point.

The 2 wire sensors are more universal - they send all the noise data to the ECU and let the ECU figure it out. The 1 wire are more "tuned" - they amplify specific frequencies so the ECU can just say "The sensor voltage went up! Knock!". The general guidance I saw is, if using a 1 wire, try to get a sensor that came from an engine with a similar bore size.

Like mentioned, the ECU is what really matters. If it supports 2 wire sensors and gives you the tools to tailor the response then you're good. It's just a matter of mounting. Most of the sensors are nearly identical just with different pigtails or connectors. The hole in the middle tends to be 8mm (5/16) but can be drilled to 3/8 just fine. Just needs to be bolted to a solid flat area. I used the Z-bar hole (with a threadsert to step it down to 5/16). I'm running one on the other side also. I'm using straight 10AN fittings out of the block so I'm using one of the 3/8 holes for the filter adapter for the other sensor.

Interesting. Being my 358 is 4.100" bore, it might be better to use the sbc sensor. It also fits in the coolant jacket which who knows if that is actually a good spot. I will do some looking into the two wire sensors. Thanks.
