66 Toro, High rpms/engine straining on highway

66 Toronado, I'm starting to notice that as you approach about 50 mph and higher the engine starts straining and spinning faster and faster.

Goes thru all 3 gears normally but something happens in that speed range (and higher).

It's def. in 3rd gear, but feels like I have to push the gas pedal harder to keep it going, and that makes the engine spin faster the faster I go.

The kickdown switch doesn't work, but I can downshift into 2 by pulling the trans lever, so I know it's in 3rd gear.
I hope this is not a transmission problem. Any ideas?

The kickdown switch also controls the switch pitch torque converter. If it's misadjusted or not working the TC may be stuck in the wrong stator angle.

Here’s what little I know about those kickdown & switch-pitch switches:

Does that mean I shouldn't be driving it with the switch unplugged?
